1. My gut tells me to expect more of this in the future
Why?

(1) Economy, more lay-offs, more frustration
(2) The active encouragement of the RW in devolving the public discourse and increasing divisive rhetoric that fan the flames of hatred (Coulter, Limbaugh, Weiner, etc).

I'd be interested in the social statistics comparing our society now as compared to the years under Clinton when peace and prosperity were the norm.

2. Economy and crime
Are linked. The higher the unemployment, the lower the wages, the higher the crime. Figure that in any group of people, there are those who will commit a crime if they are desperate enough.
It even accounts for senseless crimes like these, as desperation takes many forms.

3. prosperity maybe....peace?
These aren't social stats but a few newsworthy items from the CLinton years. "when peace and prosperity were the norm."

1st WTC bombing February 1993
Pearl MS school shooting 10-97
Paducah KY school shooting 12-97
Kenya and Tanzania embassy bombings 8-98
Columbine school shooting 4-99
Altanta daytrader shooting 7-99
Seattle shipyard shooting 11-99
Hawaii Xerox shooting 11-99
USS Cole bombing 10-2000

Just a glimpse into our pre GWB past. Hardly peaceful.

4. Way more Americans are killed by gunwackos than terrorists or are they the
same thing. How much different is the NRA than the Taliban? Not much in my opinion. Read Charlton Heston's speeches and compare them with the mullahs. God and guns uber alles.

5. subject
My post was a response to the suggested idea that the period of 1992-2000 was without its share of tragedys due to the commander-in-chief at the time.

And, AFAIK, the NRA hasn't held an entire country under its control, exported heroin or made women 2nd class citizens.

6. NRA bragged about putting Chimpy in power, they were getting an office...
Edited on Tue Jul-08-03 11:41 PM by billbuckhead
in the White House they said. Rove's best friend and Stalinist admirer Grover Norquist is on the NRA board of directors. As far as women being forced into second class status, far more wives and girlfriends are killed in America than the legions of home invaders the gunwackos brag so much about killing. Gunwackos endlessly brag about how crimes are prevented by their stamped steel death tools, but forget to include how many undereported crimes and terror are perpetrated by the threat of guns. Many of these crimes are domestic, which are bore by women and children like today in Bakersfield. Rural fundementalist voters who worship god and guns were big repuKKKe supporters, sounds a lot like the Taliban.

8. an office in the white house, ok
Nothing more than rhetoric to pump up the NRA troops and stoke membership drives.

Still doesn't really compare to a regime(Taliban) that bans...
Soccer, drinking, paper bags, flying kites, volleyball, chess, music, theatre, TV, movies, book reading, schooling for women. etc. etc.
Unless your referring to that town in Footloose, y'know where Kevin Bacon just wanted to dance.

Oh and some steel death tools are milled or forged.

7. OK, 1.125 tragedies a year.
I'm sure there were even a few more if we think hard enough. Course, I'm not sure using international events would qualify under what is essentially a comment about the increase in domestic violence.

That said, lets see how our society reacts to the Bush miracle over the next year or so.

11. It must be a great comfort to gun nuts
that there's no gun registration so that there was NO way to head this off.

13. And that would have helped?
How would registration have prevented this?

Explain in detail if you are able.

14. A racist loon
is making threats, but there's no way to determine if he is armed or not.

For that matter, perhaps this goon could not have gotten by a background check. In Mississippi, though, he could walk into any gun show and get around that requirement.

16. Well
1- From the reports I have seen they 1) never checked up on him over the 'threats', so even a registration would have done no good, and 2) it was widely know he was an avid hunter/shooter so I would assume he had guns.

2- Why do you say he may not have been able to get by a background check? I havent seen any mention of him having any of the disqualifing conditions (felon, involuntarily commited, under domestic RO). So the whole 'background check' and 'gun show' seems to be nothing more than a red herring tossed out to distract from the question.

The question was and is this:

You seemed to make the claim that registration could have prevented this, the question is how?

15. Billions spent on "Homeland Security"
But an armed lunatic is able to stroll right into America's largest defense contractor carrying two long guns without anybody even noticing or trying to stop him. What's keeping spies and saboteurs out?

Never mind extraordinary measures...where the hell is EVERYDAY security?
