Baseball Player Hit By Stray Bullet At World Championship Tournament
Source: AP, Huffington Post

CARACAS, Venezuela — A Hong Kong player was hit in the leg by a stray bullet at the women's baseball world championship on Friday, forcing the suspension of matches and increased security for other teams.

The injury was not serious, Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua told state television. He said the day's games in Caracas were suspended while police investigated what happened.

The incident occurred while the Hong Kong team was playing the Netherlands in a stadium at the Fort Tiuna military base. It wasn't clear from where the bullet was fired.

Gun violence is common in the hillside slums near the base and is a serious problem in many areas of Venezuela, which is among the most violent countries in Latin America.

7. Yes, moderately disquieting.
There are states--usually very small ones--in which the government is small enough and "intimate" enough that even small events, good or bad, appear "huge". Many events that Putin or Obama wouldn't even bear aware of are important enough that if held in Macedonia the Macedonian president would feel the obligation to be in attendance.

There are states in which what happens in civil society reflects upon the civil-society sponsors of the event. If there's some good or bad thing, unless it's huge the federal government just watches. It treats the population like adults.

There are states in which what happens in civil society is taken to reflect on the government. Negative things in civil society find their "proper" interpretation as provocations against the state. Since the governmental officers believe themselves to be in charge of society, the distinction between government and civil society is blurred. Often those officers believe (only) themselves to be adults.

So, yeah: The Venezuelan VP commented on the incident.

15. They don't moderate by forum any more.
Well, except for the Israel/Palenstine forum and the Sept. 11th forum. But everything else just goes into a common pool.

10. This happened on Hugo Chavez's watch
Of course it doesn't matter, because he was "democratically elected".

BTW, why is this posted in the Guns forum? It doesn't seem to fit the designated subject matter.

N&U for off-topic drive-by.

16. "It wasn't clear from where the bullet was fired."
So, it could have been anyone including the police or government forces? Or maybe even "The Unit" or the "A-Team" on a special mission.
