Helmke, giving up on Starbucks, now takes his road show to Utah, where he hopes to find support
Edited on Thu Jul-08-10 10:53 AM by virginia mountainman
Paul Helmke, evidently, decided it was time to "stop banging his head" on Starbucks, and has found a new whipping boy, Utah... I have noticed over the past few days, "Utah concealed weapon permits" has been appearing in national news stories.

It is amazing, that this Man, still has MSM so in his pocket, that he can make a blog post, on the Huffington Post, and the national news picks it up....And again, as with Starbucks, his last effort fell right on it's face with Starbucks, and the $20 that was raised to help the Brady Campaign in it's effort, what makes him think that Utah, a very PRO GUN state, will even acknowledge his presence, much less, give him the time of day

http://kcpw.org/blog/local-news/2010-07-07/gun-control-advocate-slams-utahs-concealed-permit-give-away/

With the list of abstract failures that the Brady Campaign has, and the lies they get caught in why does the MSM, even accept their phone calls??

1. Utah really. I mean I am glad he fails EVERYWHERE he goes but Utah.
He doesn't have snowball in hells chance of doing anything in Utah.

The only way Utah gets rid of licensed conceal carry is if they get rid of the license (aka Vermont, Alaska, Arizona).

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700044882/Proposed-Utah-bill-could-eliminate-concealed-gun-permits.html

Proposed Utah bill could eliminate concealed-gun permits

Some Utah lawmakers say the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down Chicago's ban on handgun ownership has opened the doors to let any legal gun owner in Utah carry a concealed weapon without a permit.

Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, is considering bringing a bill before the 2011 Legislature to improve Utah's widely accepted gun law.

The bill would eliminate the requirement for Utahns to have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, something they can already do in their homes and cars. But it would allow Utahns to apply for a permit so they can carry concealed weapons in other states.

12. Probably not ...
... as has been noted in this forum several times.

Supporters of Brady and Gun Control in general, seem to talk a lot and foam at the mouth on occasion, but never, ever put their money where their mouth is.

I think the phrase used in a recent post was; "Cheapskates that are full of hot air".

19. Read the new "rules of civility" from a few months back
It's not about "Alerting" on people.

A few months back, in case you missed it, Skinner published some new ground rules, some of which were clearly aimed at this specific forum.

A lot of people disappeared from this forum and from DU altogether shortly after that because they could not express themselves without violating the rules again and again. It's not just certain words, it's an attitude issue as well.

But yes, certain words and phrases from both sides of the discussion were declared "out of bounds" and would lead to immediate deletion by the Mods. Repeated use of the terms after warnings will get you tomb stoned.

If you haven't read them yet the Mods can easily direct you to them, I'm sure.

27. Well, yes, gun owners are very sensitive, thanks for noticing, but insecure? Nah.
Just malevolently well informed, thanks to a vast number of pro 2nd amendment forums ranging from law professors, to research firms, to manufacturers of all sorts of things. Not to mention millions of other gun owners online, all with wide open archives and access. We have a lot of friends and supporters out there.

It's lonely for gun control advocates though, with not a single gun control web site to draw support from. At least none that allow any conversation or discussion. So many people tell us that there is a majority in favor of more "common sense" gun control, but they can't keep a single website up and running?

Certainly we're generally better informed than most of the people we disagree with (Sin of Hubris duly noted). They seem to get most of their "facts" on guns and crime from the bumper stickers on a neighbors mini van, a network news report, or worse, the thrice debunked 1980's vintage Kellerman study.

I can understand how tough and depressing it got for many of them. After trying repeatedly to deny repeated FBI, CDC and DoJ reports on crime falling dramatically, while gun sales continue at record levels, the old "More guns = More crime" meme kind of fell apart, and many of them found themselves able to do nothing but rant and fall back on poorly worded "ad hominem" attacks and multiple small penis references.

IMNSHO That's why most of the pro gun control proponents left the forum I believe ... or more accurately were helped to leave.

I know a lot of ego filled CCW people. Almost excited about the opportunity to pull their gun. Some people need steel courage.

Also interesting is that in 2004 Brady Campaign boasted the had a million members. Today it is 50,000. Now sure which is worse lying about being a million member organization or somehow losing 95% of your members.

16. Make a big batch of popcorn, please. This will be fun to watch.
Utah is still run by the Mormon church. Due to the history of the Mormons, they are very strong on armed self-defense. Helmke is running, full speed, head down, into a very solid sandstone cliff. His defeat with Utah will make his Starbucks campaign seem like a victory.

21. I figure his target is states that honor Utah permits, rather than Utah itself
I have to assume he's capable of doing his homework, and the primary reason the Utah permit is popular, especially for non-residents, is that allows concealed carry in the largest number of states. So one approach would be to whittle down the number of states that honor Utah permits.

22. He already has a "Brady Wins Big in Utah" press release drafted.
All he has to do is find one group of confused tourists just off the tour bus, to stand in the middle of on the steps of the Temple in SLC. get his usual tight shot to make it look like a real crowd, photoshop in a few signs and claim "another great victory for the gun control movement as thousands agree with more gun control in SLC".

After Heller he had maybe 12 people on the steps of SCOTUS. They had to get a tight shot then because the NRA was about 20 feet away and had a few hundred people with Dick Anthony Heller, Gura and company.

20. Gives the journos something to do during summer, I suppose
With the list of abstract abject failures that the Brady Campaign has, and the lies they get caught in why does the MSM, even accept their phone calls??

Because it's summer, which means the supply of political news is down.

Mind you, while Helmke & Co.'s chances of influencing policy in Utah are slim, I'd guess that his strategy is to (try to) put pressure on states that honor the Utah CCW permit, and in particular Utah non-resident permits.

25. As a legal resident of Vermont, which does not require a permit...
to exercise a Civil Right, If I wish to carry in Utah, I must get a non-res permit.

I also have a New Hampshire non-res permit.

Arizona kindly considers me a resident (active duty military) for permit purposes, so I got one of those as well.

Three permits and I still can't carry in all fifty states. Helmke can become geospatially challanged and self-fornicate until he terminates.
