"Public record" (which shouldn't even be "public record"), or not, there's some serious potential for homes to be targeted for break-ins because of this.

8. "Sex offender" isn't a charge, it's a label.
Rape and child molestation are felonies. Indecent exposure or solicitation are misdemeanors. All of those can define someone as a "sex offender."

7. Felons do not legally have to register thier illegal guns (no... really)
It was ruled at some point in the past that requiring a felon to register a weapon (which would be illegal for a felon to posses) would violate that felons constitutional right against self-incrimination. Basically, felons are not required to follow registration laws.

9. see Haynes v US
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/cgi-bin/getcase.pl?court=US&vol=390&invol=85

We hold that a proper claim of the constitutional privilege against self-incrimination provides a full defense to prosecutions either for failure to register a firearm under 5841 or for possession of an unregistered firearm under 5851.

14. Convicted felons cannot legally possess a firearm at all, let alone a permit. Try again.
Of course, you knew that when you dropped that piece of bait in this thread.

29. Perfection for some gun-controllers: more stigmata & public danger...
Of course the controllers want release of concealed-carry data. In that way, they can stimatize further (as is the wont of hard-line prohibitionists of all stripes). And what of the argument that crims & thugs will use the list to break-into a gun-owners's house and steal those arms, thereby contributing to the public endangerment they supposedly decry? No matter. And no matter if an abuser just breaks into a former spouse's now-not-so-secret address and does her/him. It's all worth it to satisfy that need to stigmatize, and proclaim: My morals are more moral than your morals.

are insane..

Maybe I'll buy the list of people who are/have been members of the Brady Bunch. After all they are now selling that list. Then I'll post the names and addresses on, www.easyunarmedtargets.com, you shouldn't have any problem with that either, huh?

15. I wouldn't take it as read that contributors to the Brady Campaign don't own firearms
The gun prohibition movement is riddled with examples of people who have turned out to own (and sometimes be quite irresponsible with) firearms themselves. They just don't want other people owning guns: poor people, rural people, inner-city people, blacks, Italians, Jews, Hispanics, Asians, recent immigrants, etc. But they themselves are obviously perfectly trustworthy with a firearm.

23. Million March Mom, Barbara Graham
After helping to organize the Million Mom March, and even speaking at the event, Barbara Graham was convicted of shooting an innocent man. Now he is paralyzed for life. Barbara Grahamalso known as Barbara Lipscomb, Barbara Graham, Barbara Martin, Barbara Ann Lipscomb, Barbara Ann Graham, and Barbara Ann Martin, was also convicted on nine counts of breaking seven different gun-control laws arising from her attempt to murder construction worker Kikko Smith.

The Washington Post reported that "Police recovered three handguns and a TEC-9 submachine gun at her home." Note that the TEC-9 was banned by the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban (AWB).

6. If the goal is to keep guns (handguns especially) out of criminal's hands...
...then why make public a list of addresses that have a high likelihood of handguns?

Seems counter-productive, especially when the criminals can observe the house and the vehicles. Following somebody to work might yield a gun in a parked car, for example.

11. Extreme open carry.
Edited on Sun Jun-13-10 09:09 PM by safeinOhio
Seems everyone would want to be on this list. The crooks would be afraid to break in an armed home. One does not have to own a gun to have a CCW. I've seen people take the course with a rented gun. Like wise, there is no guarantee that some one on the Brady list does not own a gun. There is no serious potential. Most break-in artist do little to no background checks. That is most, not all. 99% of criminals are not criminals because of their high intellectual status. Just visit your local jail and you'll find this out.
Then there are the presses rights according to the First Amendment. That would make public records fair game.
I've seen a case where a criminal gang broke into expensive home in the country that had fake deer targets in the yard because they figured they had guns and bows. That is easy. Cross checking data bases is time consuming and would be unlikely.
Looking for a NRA bumper sticker on the truck would be so much easier. Then you'd have to figure out weather a gun in the home is an invitation to a crime, or a deterrence. That'd be a toss up.

17. What's next? HIV positive "public records"? Who's gotten an abortion "public records"?
I'm all for public records, but some personal data is something else.

One reason I still haven't gotten my CCW, "concealed" is just a request away from being put out in the open.

27. Under New York state law, they're not entirely distinct
The issuing authority (usually the county sheriff, if I understand correctly) has the option when issuing a permit to make it valid for carry as well as for ownership, so a NY state handgun ownership permit may or may not also be a carry permit.

21. Was it Ohio that published the names of CCW holders with home addresses?
I seem to recall that just after Ohio (or Indiana?) voted in shall issue CCW one of the papers published the names and home addresses of permit holders.

It was obviously an attempt at intimidation, but then some gun owners did some research and published the names, phone numbers and home addresses of the editorial staff of the paper online. The editor was furious and threatened to sue them.

Does anyone else remember that? Or am I feverish?

24. Virginia, maybe?
http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/108418

The list, which included both the names and street addresses of about 135,000 Virginians with permits to carry concealed weapons, was linked to a column by editorial writer Christian Trejbal that ran in the Current section.

25. Thanks for the help
I knew I remembered that from somewhere. I was only five or so states away!

I loved the irony if doing to the publishers and editors exactly what they were doing to the permit holders. A perfect balance of the 1st and 2nd amendments..

As for my memory ... like my Dad says, "Getting old is hell, until you consider the alternative."
