Okay, see what you guys did to me?
Back last year I posted asking for advice on an inexpensive rifle for shooting feral pigs. PavePusher whispered "Mosin Nagant".

I now own three of them (round receiver, hex receiver and a sportster), a 98 Mouser, a Nagant revolver and will buy a K31 next week. Oh, then there's the gunsafe and the entire closet I've taken over for extra stuff like bayonets, ammo pouches and the like. The ammo box weighs about 40 pounds.

I'm relating all this because I've had conversations with both the NRA and the BATF&E. Frankly I like the ATF better. The one and only drawback to this new hobby is dealing with nuts who buy into the NRA fear mongering. I went to Cheaper than Dirt retail store in Fort Worth and they have a Lapierre DVD on continuous replay over TVs around the store. Bought the pistol from a WWW dealer who delivered it via Express Mail instead of overnight (EM is usually two day delivery) and bitched about the government mail (USPS isn't a government entity). I buy ammo at a local surplus store and they have anti-Obama posters on display. Seems that every web outlet is heavily involved in promoting the NRA dogma.

The ATF, on the other hand, has been helpful and considerate. I spoke to an agent and explained that I just got my C&R and, like winning the lottery, suddenly got a lot of new friends.

"Is there any way I can satisfy these people and pass on a firearm to th . . .

"NO."

"But is says on the ATF website that I can disp . . ."

"You have a license to buy, not sell. Just tell them, NO."

"Thanks, that's exactly what I need to shut them up!"

We then had nice talk about how to really dispose of poor quality guns to update the collection and how to transfer to personal use and back to the collection as well as other record keeping details.

I much prefer talking to the BATF&E and as long as I follow the rules suspect that I will for the foreseeable future.

Henchman PavePusher: Master, we have another convert!

E.O.: Very good, P.P.! Now, bring me more brains! And this time, don't leave the greasy hand prints...

P.P.: But Master, there's an '03 Springfield and some Ishy-Ennies at the gun store down the street! And you know how good they look when you clean them up...

3.  Try a few Lee Enfields in the mix.
There are just as many varieties , maybe more, than the MN!

13. Smellies? Try Jackson Armory or McClelland
Did I notice right and you're in the DFW area? In that case...

I think Jackson Armory still has a couple last time I was there:

And McClelland's had one about 6 months ago, it's been there a while, so I bet it's still there:

5. This is twice that DU has done this to me.
I was looking at motorcycles for the first time in 40 years and thinking about the traditional brands like Japanese and Harley. Then this guy, DemoTex says, "Check this out. http://www.hyosungmotorsusa.com/product/introduction.asp?Cat=Cruise&model=GV650 " and sure enough I wound up with a cruiser with a crotch-rocket heart.

The MN with softnose 200g bullets will blow holes through 3/8 steel. Not bad for 100 year old technology . . .

6. Just be careful using East European ammo
All 7.62X54 Mill-Spec ball ammo has corrosive primers. Relatively cheep but hard on the bore if you don't know how to clean it properly.

It's easy to do but MUST be done real soon after trigger time has ended. Pull the bolt, with the muzzle down insert the small end of a funnel and pour a quart or so of HOT water down the bore. Clean and oil normally. Check bore the next day to look for rust. If found then patch with solvent, dry patch and then a few patches with water on them. Dry and oil bore.

Good shooting!

9. Don't shoot the old milsurp stuff. Too lazy to clean it that often and
Why bother when modern ammo is so (relatively) cheap.

12. Because cheap is cheap, and the regimen isn't all that onerous
Shooting blackpowder for a while because it was affordable and you'll gain a different perspective. A camp teakettle and
a Coleman stove and we were good to go.

I met a guy with a Dragunov who claimed that he got by with alcohol gel and cold water. YMMV, but the bore of that rifle
was nice and clean.
