It's a total loser for us Dems and it just re-inforces every fear the NRA circulates about us.

1. I wouldn't worry about it - that's old news. These days he's more likely...
...to propose that everyone buy their own tanks - maybe he'll offer a rebate.

14.  Only if they are armed with LIVE main guns and secondaries.
Otherwise it is the same as buying a second hand car. Only a LOT more expensive!

27. If they have been de-milled then no stamps are neccessary
Unless you want to re-arm it. If you live out in the desert and have the property and money to safely put it through its paces, more power to you.

18. What worries me is having AWB re-instatement STILL in the Party Platform...
where everyone can see it. Obama already has a credibility problem within his own ranks without placing himself in the position of (once again) SAYING what he will or won't do, and having posted positions advertising quite the opposite. It's like walking through a crowded restaurant trailing a bad fart, thinking no one will notice.

Did you know Michael Dorn (Lt. Worf of "Star Trek: The Next Generation") owns and flies his own Korean-era jet fighter? I don't think he got a rebate, though.

8. He wrote about it and posted it on his website during the campaign.
Edited on Thu Apr-01-10 12:24 PM by aikoaiko
I think it is from change.gov

Here is the cached version: http://74.125.93.132/search?q=cache:5mFqXw1L4M0J:change.gov/agenda/urbanpolicy_agenda/+change.gov+urban+policy&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a

In truth he has backed away from the AWB (although not explicitly) and roped in any of his underlings who mention it.

11. This is very old.
Yes, he said it during his campaign, and it was, and still is, on change.gov.

HOWEVER, shortly after the election it was scrubbed from WHITEHOUSE.GOV, and his attorney general, Eric Holder, was vociferously beat down for bringing up the assault weapons ban.

Right now, gun control is a dead issue with the Obama administration. I don't believe that it is out of a sincere respect for the right to keep and bear arms, but rather because it is politically untenable right now.

But your posting that "Obama said..." is out-of-date.

10. He said it, and it was posted on all his websites.
http://obama.3cdn.net/84b2062fc4a5114715_f...

Note especially the part about "As a long-time resident and elected official of Chicago, Barack Obama has seen the impact of fully automatic weapons in the hands of criminals. Thus, Senator Obama supports making permanent the expired federal Assault Weapon Ban."

Read that again, "FULLY AUTOMATIC WEAPONS in the hands of criminals" are a problem he proposes to solve by banning guns that are not fully automatic and not in the hands of criminals.

Again, how much more directly or more plainly can he say he supports reinstating the ban on semiautomatic weapons by pretending they are machineguns?

There is nothing in his voting record in the Illinois assembly, as a US Senator or his speeches that that disavows his anti-gun stance, it is only as President he has chosen not to comment publicly on it. There is nothing to indicate a change of heart, at best, it is only a pragmatic desire not to inflame opposition at this time.

12. Your right
I don't believe for 1 sec. that he has changed his mind about wanting to ban "Assault Weapons", however, being the smart politician that he is, he realized that gun control was a losing proposition and has backed away and obviously most of the Congresscritters have said, with the exception of a few, no thanks, we like our cushy jobs

13. It's quite possible that the Democrats will lose seats in the midterm...
Historically, this has usually been true.

In the 19 mid-term elections held since 1934, only twice has the President's party gained seats in both the Senate and the House: FDR's first mid-term election and George W. Bush's first mid-term election. On three other occasions, the President's party gained House seats and once it was a draw. On one occasion, the President's party gained Senate seats.
http://uspolitics.about.com/od/elections/l/bl_mid_term_election_results.htm

I think Obama realizes that trying for an "assault weapons" ban at this time might cause higher loses.

At the same time there is a lot of pressure from some Democrats and from Mexico to reinstate the ban.

Mexico's drug war is now involving its army and while lots of blood is being spilled, it's hard to say if the Mexican government will win. Mexico would like to blame our country for its problems. While many if not the majority of firearms used by the cartels come from countries south of Mexico and from Mexico's army itself, it's easy for the politicians to blame good old Uncle Sam.

While we do need to make a serious effort to stop the flow of any firearms across our borders to either Canada or Mexico, a new assault weapons ban in our country would accomplish little as the supply of firearms would come from other countries and be cheaper and more deadly as they would be fully automatic military firearms.

16. Oh yeahhhhhhhhh
He's really out there pushing for more gun control:sarcasm:
You gun controllers dream of more restrictions is just that, a dream, Pres. Obama and the Congresscritters are staying as far away as possible. When Eric Holder said that one of the goals of the Obama Admin was to make the AWB premanant, Nancy Pelosi couldn't get to a mic fast enough to say that Holder could make all the suggestions he wanted but only the Congress could pass laws and that they were not even going to entertain new gun control laws, basically what she told Holder was

17. The only action he has taken while in office concerning
the Second Amendment is to sign a law allowing CCWs to carry in National Parks. Even though Obama and Biden favor peace in our life time, so what. As he has shown today with off shore drilling, he is a pragmatist above all. The gun issue you bring up is just another fear tactic used by extremist like teabaggers and the NRA to attack the Black President.

21. The NRA fears Obama.
Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 08:36 PM by GreenStormCloud
It isn't because he is black. To suggest racism where there is none is to undercut your own argument. It is because his record and statement prior to becoming president have been strongly anti-gun that they fear him. Fortunately, Obama is pragmatist enough to leave guns alone, but that is only because he is aware of how strong the backlash can be on guns.

I'd say at least half of the NRA members I know personally are racist to the bone. Most likely the same percentage as in the teabag movement.

The Tea Party gathering at Searchlight, NV had about 8200 people and was very peaceful, and as much as I hate to admit it, it was our side that became violent by throwing eggs at their bus and shouting insults.
If you don't believe me, it's all on tape and Metro didn't do a fucking thing about it.

There are several Tea Party members, including one African-American, at the station I work at and not one, REPEAT, NOT ONE OF THEM IS RACIST, I know because I work with these guys and gals and I put my life in their hands every time we go out on say, a fire or an accident or a rescue.

They know that I am a Democrat but they don't give me any shit at all and we have very polite discussions when we talk politics.

They have some valid complaints about the govt. like how big and intrusive it has gotten, which I happen to agree with, just like they say the Dems have some good ideas also so to brand them as racist, or as you say, half of them are racist, is just plain stupid.

I've yet to run into a "racist teabagger" as you call them, and believe me, in my line of work I run into a lot of different people.

28. That is ridiculous. The NRA is neither extremist nor an organization
that has a stance on any issue unrelated to firearms. They are a firearms group, from back to front. The warnings about Obama they put out during the General Election were based on his prior voting record as it relates to firearms and his prior statements regarding firearms. I don't know anything about the teabaggers, because I've been in a couple tangles of my own lately and have stopped following the news for the most part. Either way they are irrelevant to this discussion.

It would be in the party's best interest if we were to issue an across the board acknowledgement that any law remotely resembling the AWB is a waste of legislative resources and cannot have any positive impact on the nation, certainly not at the cost to private citizens they entail.

And signing that bill making National Parks laws conform to their host state was an eminently rational one, it made no sense to deny people in a state that allows licensed concealed carry or some form of open carry the ability to carry while out in the woods, far from any type of assistance if things should go horribly wrong somehow.

National Parks are also an increasingly popular place to grow marijuana, not by peaceful individuals growing for their own use, but commercial growers who have a lot at stake if their crop were to be found.

19. I don't believe that President Obama is getting good advice on the subject
of gun control. Shortly after making his comments sympathetic to CIFTA some the righties at the range where I shoot were talking about it non-stop. I honestly don't believe that our administration has the foggiest clue as to the degree of distrust the gun rights
community has for the United Nations -- and with good cause.

I'm of the belief that until our Dem pols wise up it may be time to practice tough love. The last time the DNC sent me a letter begging for dollars I told them that they'd get my dollars when they stop shooting themselves in the foot -- and not until. If the haters really understood the degree to which they empower the NRA with their counter-productive, hypocritical contempt they'd back off, but I'm not expecting that to happen anytime soon.
