GUNS IN THE NEWS--December 26, 2003
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Owner Killed, 2 Workers Shot In Robbery (FL)
"A storeowner was killed and two of his employees shot during a late night robbery Monday.
It happened just outside A and G Custom Cabinetry on Greenwood Avenue. Three men were working late and police said an armed gunman tried to rob them. The crook apparently got away with only a set of keys, but he shot all three men.
Business owner Orville Green was killed inside the cabinet shop, but a second man, Hugh Escoffrey, managed to walk about five blocks before collapsing on the sidewalk just outside the emergency room at St. Mary's Medical Center. That's where he was found by an off-duty police officer. "

3. Atlanta man killed in road rage incident on Gulf Coast highway
Domestic terrorism...

"OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) — An Atlanta man died of a gunshot wound Thursday after his car was fired upon by occupants of another vehicle on Interstate 10 on the Gulf Coast.
Sgt. Joe Gazzo of the Mississippi Highway Patrol identified the victim as 40-year-old Datel Ghanshyam. Four other family members, all adults, were unhurt, Gazzo said.
Gazzo said Ghanshyam and his family arrived in Biloxi on Wednesday to go to the casinos.
About 7 a.m. Thursday, Gazzo said they left casinos, getting back on I-10 East in Ocean Springs. Soon after they merged onto the highway, a small, blue imported car with a loud, large aftermarket muffler, came up alongside the family, repeatedly swerving close to them, then getting in front of them and slowing down.
Gazzo said witnesses told investigators that one of the occupants of the harassing car then got on a cell phone and apparently called another vehicle, a brown sports utility vehicle, which pulled alongside the Atlanta family and opened fire with an automatic weapon."

4. Teenager shoots boy, 12, while playing with gun (IN)
"Evansville -- A 12-year-old boy was recovering from a bullet wound Wednesday after he was accidentally shot by a friend playing with a handgun.
The boys initially told Evansville police a person fired at them Tuesday from a passing car but later changed their statement.
The 15-year-old boy who fired the gun told police he found it in a trash bin behind a tavern and wanted to show it to friends, but the gun slipped when he removed it from his pocket. When he tried to grab the weapon, it fired."

5. MINNEAPOLIS: 18-year-old charged in downtown shooting
"Shots were fired outside Target Center as a high school basketball tournament game was letting out late Tuesday afternoon, Minneapolis police said.
No one was injured, but police heard the gunshots and officers even witnessed the gunman fire his pistol once into the air, authorities said.
McClendon Miller, 18, of Richfield was arrested without incident and charged Wednesday with second-degree assault on suspicion of firing the weapon in the Block E entertainment district as workers and holiday shoppers, along with tournament fans, converged on the downtown sidewalk."

6. Man first charged under new terror law (OH)
"A Cleveland man has more notoriety than he may ever have envisioned as the first person to be charged under Ohio's anti-terrorism law.
Biswanath Halder, 62, faces 338 counts, including kidnapping, assault and murder for a May 9 standoff at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
The state legislature approved the anti-terrorism law last year -- a local response to the Sept. 11 attacks. The law restricts access to security and infrastructure records of buildings and creates a new class of crime punishable by death.
The latter part of the law lay fallow until the camouflage-clad Halder, armed with two guns and wearing a bulletproof vest, allegedly pumped hundreds of rounds of ammunition in the Peter B. Lewis Building, killing one person and wounding two others. Graduate student Norman Wallace, 30, of Youngstown, died after being shot in the chest."

7. Deli Manager Charged In Fatal Shooting (FL)
"BOCA RATON - A deli manager who said he fatally shot a supporter of the late Mafia leader John Gotti in self-defense has been charged with manslaughter after investigators said evidence did not support his claim.
Ralph Liotta's ruthless demeanor in the moments after he pumped four bullets into John Gurino helped shatter his defense, investigators said. Three of the bullets struck Gurino in the back.
When bystanders tried to help Gurino, Liotta called the dying man a vulgarity and said ``leave him there.'' "

"Two women and a 2-year-old child were shot at close range outside a Pikesville apartment complex yesterday morning by a masked gunman who riddled the car they were warming up with bullets, police and witnesses said.
A second child sitting in the back of the Honda Accord was unharmed during the 7:15 a.m. shooting in the 4400 block of Old Court Road, police said.
All three victims were rushed to area hospitals, police said. Most seriously hurt was the front-seat passenger, who was flown to Maryland Shock-Trauma Center. The driver and the 2-year-old were taken to Sinai Hospital."

9. Police Seek Four Suspects In Quadruple Murder (AL)
"BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Investigators say they know who they are looking for after four young Hispanic men were found shot to death in Centerpoint Tuesday night.
Police are looking for three men and one woman they suspect were involved in the shooting. Investigators said the suspects' arrests will be made when they are found. The suspects' names will be released Thursday.
Police are calling it a drug deal that turned deadly for Rafael Selcado, Enrique Marquez, Wilbur Gomez and Manuel Perez Nunez. Investigators said the four supplied 35 pounds of pot to would-be buyers who decided to kill the four friends instead of paying for the drugs. The marijuana has a street value of $16,000.
Selcado's aunt doesn't believe her 15-year-old nephew was involved in drugs. She believes his murder was racially motivated."

10. Dead man's gun wasn't loaded (PA)
"A Lynn Township man who was shot and killed by a state trooper outside his home Tuesday night had pointed an unloaded handgun at the trooper, officials said Wednesday.
Capt. Scott R. Snyder of the state police at Bethlehem and Lehigh County District Attorney James B. Martin said a preliminary review of the shooting of Glenn Brinkman indicated it was justified.
''He's exclusively responsible for what happened,'' Snyder said.
Inside Brinkman's double-wide trailer on Dresher Road, Snyder said, troopers found an arsenal of 49 firearms: 23 handguns, 20 rifles and six shotguns that police said appeared to be strategically placed around doors and windows. Several cases of ammunition also were in the house, Snyder said.
Five weapons taken from Brinkman's home, including a civilian version of a military M-16 and an imitation Tommy gun submachine gun, were displayed at the news conference at the state police barracks at Bethlehem."

16. Happy to.....
Meaningful gun control is bottled up in the Republican congress, which does the bidding of the NRA. NRA lobbyists actually wrote the 1986 Firearms Owners' Protection Act. (McClure-Volkmer).

18. What "meaningful" legislation is that??
You must be referring to the "Lawful Comerce in Firearms Act"

The bill to reauthorize the AWB will have little if any effect on crime.
The proposed legislation to renew and strengthen the AWB will have little if any effect on crime.
The proposals to end the fallacious "Gunshow Loophole" will have little if any effect on crime.

28. What It Really Shows......
....is that as long as steps are not taken to enact effective and reasonable gun control, there will continue to bee assholes with guns out there that place all gun owners in a bad light.

In that regard, I would think that responsible pro-gunners would be in favor of gun control, because it would get guns out of the hands of irresponsible people - the way that good doctors want the bad doctors weeded from their ranks.

advocates such as AGS admit only 20 of 22 Federal gun laws are enforced. Why make more? I would be happy to have those on the books enforced, effectively increasing gun control.

The officer was killed with his own gun while trying to arrest the unarmed POS . . .

FYI: The officer went to check on this ass**le as a "welfare call" after someone reported that the POS drove away from her place "intoxicated and agitated."
