GUNS IN THE NEWS--December 24, 2003
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. State lawmaker arrested after handgun found in baggage at airport
"Police at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport arrested state Rep. Dick Borrell, R-Waverly, on Saturday after federal screeners found a loaded derringer in his carry-on luggage.
After a screening machine detected the weapon, Borrell was handcuffed at the checkpoint, then charged with failing to disclose the small pistol, which was confiscated. He was allowed to continue his trip on a later flight. He faces a Feb. 12 hearing on the misdemeanor charge in Hennepin County District Court.
Borrell told police that he forgot the weapon was in his carry-on luggage. He said in a telephone interview Monday that he had failed to empty the bag that he normally takes with him on driving trips. He said he has carried a pistol for 15 years for potential self-protection but has "never had occasion to use it."
Borrell was elected to the Minnesota House last year. He was indicted in March by a grand jury on gross misdemeanor charges of publishing false statements about his election opponent."

4. Gary's gun lawsuit gets go-ahead
A Xmas present for the people of Gary...

"The Indiana Supreme Court cleared the way Tuesday for the city of Gary to sue gun manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors over allegations that they sold handguns they knew were likely to end up in the hands of criminals.
In a decision that could prove far-reaching, the state high court also ruled that this northwestern Indiana city, the state's fifth largest, can pursue its claim that handguns sold without safety devices such as gun locks are negligently designed.
The 5-0 ruling clears the way for a trial in Lake Superior Court unless Congress votes to ban lawsuits against the gun industry by municipalities and the victims of gun violence. Gary is among 33 municipalities that have sued the industry.
In court papers, Gary officials likened their lawsuit to trying to recover the cost of cleaning up a toxic waste spill.
"The court here held that if gun manufacturers and distributors are supplying criminals, Gary should be able to go to court to stop it," said Daniel Vice, an attorney with the Brady Center. "This ruling is important, especially coming now." "

Home invasion turns deadly
Police say Bradenton man shoots, kills intruder; no charges filed
BRIAN HAAS
Herald Staff Writer

BRADENTON - Cars are constantly coming and going to Ronald Cote's house, neighbors say. But there was a deadly difference late Friday night.

About 11 p.m., police said, Richard Bing Jr., 35, forced his way into the house at 519 21st Ave. W.

Inside the home, Bing put a gun to a female resident's head, the woman told police.

Instead of robbing her, police said, Bing was shot to death.

One of the bullets struck the seat of Amberger's car, and the other struck her in the side without penetrating her body, according to police.
Police believe the shooting was a random act.
About 15 minutes prior to Amberger being shot, officers were called to the same area after someone reported shots being fired. However, the officers did not find anything when they arrived, and it is not known if the two incidents are related, WLWT reported. "

10. Reputed mobster shoots man for heckling singer
http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Northeast/12/24/mobster.restaurant.reut/index.html

The scene in one of New York's fabled Italian restaurants would have done "The Sopranos" TV scriptwriters proud -- a reputed mobster shot a man dead for heckling a woman singer.

Police said Broadway chanteuse Rena Strober was singing "Don't Rain on My Parade" at Rao's, an East Harlem restaurant, Monday night when a patron, Albert Circelli, criticized her performance.

Reputed Luchese crime family associate Louis Barone told him to watch his mouth but when Circelli swore in response, Barone pulled out a .38 caliber revolver and shot him in the back, police said.

A second shot fired by Barone hit another diner, Al Petraglia, 57, in the foot, police said. Barone dropped the revolver, walked out of the restaurant and was arrested by police officers.
