GUNS IN THE NEWS--December 23, 2003
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

9. Cry me a river, dems
Excuse the fuck out of me for thinking his neighbors might not enjoy the fireworks....and would have enjoyed it even less if the fire had spread to their homes.

Maybe you can find a Bob Novak story to add here.

16. But where is the gun
this is guns in the news thread. Your rules. He could collect gun powders, he could be a bomb maker and yes he could be a reloader. But there is no gun in the story. If the pro gun folks have to play by your rules than make the anti gun folks also.

17. The Article Stated.......
....that the ATF was investigating. We'll see how this story develops.

BTW, these threadsa re for "gun-related" stories. I believe that gunpowder is related to guns, so MrBenchley's story belongs here, IMHO.

18. Gun powder is for muzzle loaders
Smokeless Powder is for modern cartridge firearms. They are NOT the same. Load the wrong one and you will most likely blow up the firearm/shooter.

22. Further research showed, dems
the explosion wedged the gun firmly up this dangerous dimwit's ass....

"Amazing," said Dr. U. R. Punkd of the Houston Medical Hospital, "You often hear about assholes with guns, but you rarely see this clear a case."

11. Police: Transient Killed Over Bottle Of Vodka
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A man was arrested over the weekend after police found him standing over the dead body of an acquaintance at a campsite frequented by transients

I'am sure there had to be a gun somewhere in that area.

24. Local News
Local news on this incident stated that the guy had a fireworks hobby. To make fireworks he was either using commercial black powder or mixing his own. Either way, doesn't sound a lot loke a gun story to me.

5. Man Convicted In Ice Cream Parlor Shooting (HI)
"A jury convicted Shane Mark Monday of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Honolulu police officer Glen Gaspar.
Mark had been charged with first-degree murder, but the jury convicted him of the lesser offense, the verdict carrying a mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole.
Mark was also on trial for another shooting and the jury found him guilty of second-degree attempted assault for that incident as well. He stood motionless while the jury read its verdict. Gaspar's brother broke down when he heard the jury's decision."

6. Gunfire locks down Windsor Square (NC)
"MATTHEWS - Police locked down the Windsor Square shopping center, preventing customers from leaving for about 90 minutes Monday night, after a fugitive fired out the window of a nearby motel, authorities said.
The fugitive, identified as Jason Johnson, surrendered to U.S. marshals about 10:30 p.m. Nobody was hurt in the incident.
Authorities went to the Luxbury motel on U.S. 74 looking for Johnson, who is from Charlotte but was wanted on felony weapons charges in South Carolina. As members of the Hornet's Nest fugitive task force approached Johnson's room, he saw them and put a gun to his head, said U.S. Marshal Greg Forest.
As marshals were trying to convince Johnson to surrender, he fired a gun out the window of his room, toward the shopping center, Forest said. Nobody was hit by the bullet."

15. The only way to stop crimes such as this...
is to sue the maker of the offending skillet.

If only it had a safety.

If only it wasn't so heavy and so easy to hold. (assault-style grip is evil and should be banned)

Each time you swing that skillet it is a danger.

With little training that skillet can be converted to a full auto... frying pan!
