Project Safe Neighborhoods implemented in PA
Despite the immediate poo-pooing of this program by some posters of the JPS forum, more and more communities are adopting PSN as an effective way of reducing crime and taking the most violent criminals off the street for a long time.

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The penalties for repeat gun and drug violators have gone up and local law enforcement officials are now hoping for a reduction in violent crime.

Monday morning in Harrisburg, several officials from law enforcement agencies applauded the new penalties under a federal program called Project Safe Neighborhoods. It prosecutes some state crimes under the federal system and is designed to take repeat offenders off the streets for as long as possible.

"When we take these individuals off the street, we're seeing violent crime decrease. We're seeing assaults, burglaries, robberies because many times, these individuals are using guns," U.S. Attorney Thomas Marino said

1. Too too funny
That's the Republicans for you...all promises and no results.

You will recall that in Albuquerque all this program did was pad federal stats...and it was such hot shit there that it was getting cut by $70,000....

2. I have advocated this in the past
http://www.vahv.org/Exile/

In 1997, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Richmond developed and carried out an aggressive, innovative, and creative approach to this violence called "Project Exile."

How can going after armed felons be a bad thing? This was started during Bill Clinton's term, I guess the repugs had to change the name so they could claim ownership of the idea.

3. They Tried to Call it "Project Eddie Eagle".....

...but that wouldn't fly.

</sarcasm>

Seriously, I don't recall anyone pooh-poohing this idea. Project Exile has been working well here in Colorado since it was implemented by Tom Strickland, former Democratic US Attorney under Bill Clinton, and NRA member.

(See, I don't have a problem with NRA members - just the assholes in their leadership.)

23. Gee, dems...

This doesn't do a damn thing to make crime drop...nor does the source even claim such a thing.. All it does is lock offenders away for a somewhat longer time AFTER they have committed a crime with a gun they have been able to get easily (in New Mexico criminals can walk into any gun show and buy guns without a background check).

And it shifts the prosecution from the state level to the Federal level, for no other reason than to pad the Federal stats so AshKKKroft can say "See, I am tough on crime."

26. Who the hell are you trying to kid?

What effective program? All this stupidity did was move the prosecution from the state level to the Federal level to pad the Federal stats. There's no claim made that this did any damn thing else.

And the cherry on top of this sundae is that it's such a hotshit program that it's being cut by $70,000 next year! Yay-y-y-y-y-y-y!!

39. You can spin until you're blue in the face, fly

There's nothing in the article about any drop in crime...and for good reason.

"Yeah, the ONLY reason this is going on is for some political gain, not because it's a good idea."
Yeah, fly, it's such a hotshit idea they're cutting the funding. <sarcasm>>Surely Republicans wouldn't do something that was all spin and no substance,....not the party that snuck pResident Turd into Baghdad airport on Thanksgiving Day to wave around a prop turkey that the carefully screened troops on hand weren't allowed to eat.

5. I love it!
Sandman,
I am glad you reposted those for me, I din't get a chance to see those posts. (I love the ignore feature!)

Why would anyone be so opposed to an effort to go after armed criminals? I guess if gun violence is decreased it will be harder to achieve the ultimate objective of a total ban. Gunshow loophole? An honest man would say "ending private sales".

I've thought Exile was good for years. I only meant to point out what I considered pooh-poohing...If you inferred that I believe your thoughts are the same, my apologies...S

Feds Bust OH-NJ Gun Trafficking Ring
Washington, DC--A gun trafficking ring in which Ohio college students acted as phony buyers for weapons intended for a New Jersey street gang has been broken up as part of a national crackdown on gun crime, federal prosecutors say.

How could any sane person think this is a bad thing? Oh, thats right, it is only targeting criminals with guns. Any good gun law would target the 99.9% of the gun owners that are law abiding.

12. Gee, cross...tell us how this had anything to do
with moving cases from state courts to federal courts.

"How could any sane person think this is a bad thing?"
Search me....but the RKBA crowd sure screamed and raged enough when this was posted in guns in the news a few weeks ago...and then they started their own thread to bitch about it some more..

a repeat drug offender. When cops are encouraged to chemically destroy a certain plant that naturally grows in the wild, just because it resembles a plant that gets you high....well thats just fucked up.

13. A Question, 1a.......
By your own admission, you are aware of the drug laws and have made a conscious decision to violate them. What assurance can you give anybody that you wouldn't disregard the gun laws in a similar manner??

14. Well CO
When i feel the gun laws are a violation of my rights, like i feel the drug laws are, then i will disregard them also. Right now they are not a violation of my rights.

15. I don't have a problem withmost gun law violations,
it is the murder, robbery, assault, and other crimes I have a problem with. Of course, gun laws do not seem to apply to murderers,et al.

For now, compliance with gun laws are an indication of character. If I lived in some states, I would move because of gun laws alone.
