2 charged in shooting that wounded mother holding child

Two gang members exchanged gunfire with rival gang members Thursday afternoon in Uptown, shooting a woman as she held her 1-year-old child, Chicago police said.

Dontaneous Salley, 22, of the 4400 block of North Racine Avenue, and Jeremiah Moore, 20, of the 800 block of West Sunnyside Avenue, were each charged with aggravated battery with a firearm early this morning in connection with the shooting.

Salley and Moore were exchanging gunfire with members of a rival gang in the 1100 block of West Wilson Avenue about 4:20 p.m. Thursday when the woman, 21, was at a nearby bus stop holding her child in her arms, police said.

The woman was shot in the leg during the gang members' spat and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was treated and released. The child was not hurt.

In my opinion, criminal gangs are terrorist organizations and should be treated as such.

The state has 1,100 gangs and nearly 49,000 "gang members, associates and gang-related persons throughout the state,'' a news release says.

The statistic was released by Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum and members of the Coordinating Council on Gang Reduction in their first report about gang-reduction strategies.

Disarming honest citizens will do little to reduce the violence caused by criminal gangs. Since they often deal in smuggled drugs, gangs can easily obtain firearms for their turf wars.

Gun-related homicide is most prevalent among gangs and during the commission of felony crimes. In 1976, the percentage of homicides caused by firearms during arguments was about the same as from gang involvement (about 70 percent), but by 1993, nearly all gang-related homicides involved guns (97 percent), whereas the percentage of gun homicides related to arguments remained relatively constant. The percentage of gang-related homicides caused by guns fell slightly to 94 percent in 2004, but the percentage of homicides caused by firearms during the commission of a felony rose from about 60 percent to 77 percent from 1976 to 2005.
