Particularly if he was using black powder and not a substitute like Pyrodex.

When dry, black powder is extremely volatile. However, it's also hygroscopic and tends to become more so if exposed to the air for long periods of time.

And water is the enemy of any propellent.

You just don't leave a loaded cap and ball pistol stored in a gun cabinet for any length of time
