Gun shop owner murdered.
Edited on Wed Feb-24-10 08:40 PM by Kaleva
"We have nothing to be concerned about at the present time," State Police Detective Sergeant David Johnston told TV6.

We who live in Upper Michigan apparently are the care free type.

4. Sorry enough to make a punchline out of his murder.
Didn't your parents raise you better than that?

6. And how many deaths do you make light of on this forum?
You're Mr. "looks like he picked the wrong house", if I recall.

Spare me the lecture just because this death doesn't suit your viewpoint.

7. So now you are equating his murder with that of a criminal killed in self defense?
I take that back about your parents.

10. I'd imagine it's the same to their families.
I wished comfort to the dead man's family, as I would to any family who has lost someone.

Still, this does speak against the argument that an armed person, or a person with access to firearms, is a safe person. No?

11. Who here believes that firearm possession automatically makes one safe?
I believe having access to a firearm, being highly trained in its use and being very aware of your surroundings can give you an opportunity to defend yourself against a grave threat.

12. Please point out where anyone said a firearm is a gaurantee of safety.
It's O.K., I'll wait.....

13. You mean it speaks against the STRAWMAN argument that an armed person is safe
because it's YOUR strawman.

19. Your statement needs correction....
"Still, this does speak against the argument that an armed person, or a person with access to firearms, is a safe person. No?"

You contend that someone in these threads has floated an "argument" which professes an "armed person is a safe person." Please point out where this argument is made. Cite names, places, provide links.

What IS contended here is that an armed person stands a better chance to thwart violent attack/criminality. Arms to not make one "safe." They do provide significantly better protection in the event of attack.

You have created an argument, then defeated it. No?

BTW, I do not equate the death of a thug (when committing a violent crime) with the murder of a shop owner, and neither does the law.

16. Guns are no guarantee of safety.
Carrying a gun is no guarantee of safety during an assault, any more than wearing a seatbelt guarantees safety in a car crash.

Yet some people still find it prudent to use the tools that are available to them to increase their odds. It doesn't always help.

9. Sometimes the bad guys win.
Edited on Wed Feb-24-10 08:53 PM by GreenStormCloud
None of us here claim that a gun is a magic talisman, nor that victory for the good guys is a sure thing. We only claim that having a gun gives the good guy more of a chance than he would have otherwise.

20. Firearms are only a part of a larger plan
Self-defense has many components and/or layers.

To think a firearm would magically save someone from a nasty situation is ludicrous.
