North Carolina GOP Congressional Candidate Holds Machine Gun Social

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/12/north-carolina-gop-congre_n_460224.html

Tim D'Annunzio, House GOP candidate for North Carolina's 8th Congressional district, held an unusual fundraiser on Thursday night.

A contribution of $25 came complete with a full North Carolina barbecue dinner, sweet tea, a semi-automatic machine gun magazine for use at Jim's Guns Indoor Shooting Range in Fayetteville, NC, the site of the fundraiser, and a raffle ticket for a chance to win an AR-15 assault rifle.

52-year old D'Annuzio is one of at least five Republicans hoping to win the nomination for North Carolina's 8th District. He is a staunch advocate of 2nd Amendment rights, a point that he seems to have gotten across with Thursday night's "machine gun social."

8. Good, a new argument ...
However, your statement might apply to you far more than it does to a person who practices "Staunch advocacy of so-called 2A rights".

Psychological Fitness: Acceptance is easier said than done ...

The Serenity Prayer beckons us to "accept the things we cannot change and to change the things we can." Accepting something we cannot change seems reasonable enough, so why is it so hard to do? Why do we beat our heads against the wall, try to get blood from a stone, try to change other people when we know full well that none of it will work?

***snip***

Although we consciously know better, unconsciously we sometimes refuse to accept that which does not fit into our life plans. We may refuse to accept something that took place in the past that we can't undo, such as a poor performance rating which led to the loss of a job. We may resist accepting events in the present that we can't control, such as a loved one moving out of state for a better life opportunity. We may also fight realities of the future that are inevitable, like our own aging and mortality. Intellectually, we know what the facts are, but emotionally, we haven't come to terms with it. It's like a mouthful of foul-tasting medicine that we know we should take but we don't want to swallow.

Change what you can

Even when events of the past, present or future are beyond our control, we do have a lot to say about how we process the feelings associated with these events. We have the option to put the feelings into words, to share them with those whom we trust and to move through the grieving process rather than trying to avoid it or getting stuck in the middle of it. Moving through the acceptance and grief, the feelings of sadness and loss can gradually fade, making room for relief, renewed energy and new opportunities.

If you find yourself spending a lot of energy trying to accomplish something that is not possible or does not make sense even to you, ask yourself if you might be afraid of dealing with the emotions that go along with accepting a part of life as it is.

17. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I believe in fair debate.
And you seem to be trying to thwart such a discussion. Do you think it's OK to lie in order to promote the cause of gun control? And when someone else dares object to your position, do you think it's OK if you try to demean them, whith no attempt on your part to challenge their actual point?

Right now I don't care what the rest of the world thinks. You staked your ground. Defend it if you can.

Would you trust a report on health care reform that was written by someone who didn't know the difference between an HMO and an HSA? An article on cars written by someone who didn't know the difference between a manual transmission and an automatic?

3. There is no such thing as a semi-automatic machine gun.
It needs to be capable of full automatic fire if it is to be characterized as a machine gun. Sounds scarier though.

Even when folks got to shoot full auto mp5's and uzi's.

This one I can forgive, since it counters one of the times they called a semi-auto full-auto :)

32. The event was promoted by D'Annunzio as a 'Machine Gun Social'
Participants were invited to shoot MP-5s and Uzis that were capable of full automatic fire. Apparently the HuffPo author got confused between the semiautomatic AR-15 door prize and the submachine guns that were available at the firing range.

So use of the 'machine gun' label in the HuffPo article was not an act of deceit.

If it WAS a machine gun, and has been converted to a semi-auto, it's no longer a machine gun.

36. Before we all go crazy about this (Too late I know) this is around Fort Bragg
and Pope AFB. There are a lot of military types around who are weapons enthusiasts. Fort Bragg is not just any military installation. It is home of the 82nd Airborne and a major base and training center for Special Operations Groups, i.e., very hard core military types.

My recommendation is to let this go as a regional thing.
