Bust nets pot, 60 guns
A joint investigation between the DeKalb and Jackson county sheriff’s department ended Thursday in the confiscation of of drugs and guns in Section.

Jerry Conald Moore, 56, of Section is charged with first-degree drug manufacturing and unlawful possession of marijuana in relation to the investigation.

DeKalb Sheriff Jimmy Harris said officers with his department, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Section Police Department, DeKalb County Drug Task Force, Drug Enforcement Administration and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms carried out a search of Moore’s home on County Road 43 in Section on Thursday, with the help of drug-sniffing dogs.

Harris said officers seized 6 pounds of marijuana, a “large” meth lab, about 60 guns, a vehicle and $5,000.

1. Why don't you ever have a point?
In other news:

1) The sun is still hot.
2) Gravity still works.

Criminals commit crimes. So what?!

3. Law enforcement succeeded, k&r
I don't really care about the pot, despite the amount... but the lab, armament, and cash show that this was not your average street corner dealer. Good for the cops. With the drug+guns charges hopefully this guy gets put away for good as it's obvious he was not only the dealer but supplier & manufacturer as well. I think this story goes to show that despite stringent restrictions, criminals will obtain illicit items. However, this story also shows that rigorous enforcement of laws on the books is needed to fight possession of prohibited items... the laws to do the job are there, we just have to execute.

Did you have any thoughts on this onehandle?

5. Good bust.
I'm all for legalization of marijuana, but that was a good bust, meth and a significant amount of weaponry.

7. One thing I notice with all drug busts
Edited on Tue Feb-09-10 12:41 PM by doc03
is even if it is a very small amount of marijuana they always make a big deal about perfectly legal guns. Many times they may find an old beat up 22 rifle or an old shotgun and treat it like they just took down Al Capone. They say they had 60 guns, what kind of guns? Were they really automatics or just a semi-auto? What about the a vehicle, is owning a car a crime?

9. Also the "street value" of whatever they seize always goes sky-high...
They "calculate" it starting with something like 20 dollars per joint...or probably more now, it's been a while since I paid much attention to that crap

be no crime here at all?

10. I wonder what will become of the 4 pounds of pot, 30 guns, and $2,000
I'm sure some crime victims' fund would be glad to get 2 pounds of pot, 5 guns, and $200.

11. I get where your coming from but seriously:
The pot should be destroyed (cause it is currently illegal - stupid law), the guns should be run to see if stolen (returned to the owner if stolen) and then be put up for auction to FFL's, and the cash should be placed in an account for next years police budget.

15. I work in a steel mill (well I did before being laid off). The FBI
brought their contraband drugs and guns to burn them in our furnace every once in a while. It was interesting they would show up in 4 or 5 black Suburbans and a large cargo van full of contraband. They had guards watching it unloaded into a pay-loader bucket and more guards watching it dumped into the scrap charging vessel and more guards watching it go into the furnace. They had all their black SWAT Team stuff on and assault weapons locked and loaded. The overhead craneman got to inhale the smoke.

16. IMO, money from busts should never be tied to police budgets...
conflicts of interest can cloud even honest people's judgment.

13. With the caveat that meth labs should not
Cottage meth production results in six measures of chemical waste for every measure of meth produced, plus there's noxious fumes, fire/explosion hazard, etc. There really is nothing good about meth.

But then again, meth is the bathtub gin of our time; a nasty concoction whose existence is entirely the result of prohibition.

19. If the drugs were legal, this probably wouldn't be an issue either.
The meth production would go to labs with proper facilities and probably better techniques that produce less waste; assuming anybody would want the stuff if they could get really good pot without worrying about the fuzz. As it stands, though...yeah, meth labs=serious problems.
