Austrailian students permanently injured from public attacks.
Video of a group teens on a train gleefully stomping a man on a public train.
Seems to be a lot of beatings in Australia, dangerous place. I'd prefer to be able to carry my gun.

1. Won't do you a bit of good if someone cold cocks you...
In fact, they might discover your piece and use it on you.

5. Not necessarily dissagreeing with you.
But if you have a gun you have more options. A person who has no options is more likely to just comply with a badguy in hopes of not making things worse. Badguys will often get just a little aggressive to feel out the potential victim. A good candidate for a victim will do anything he can to avoid trouble, he won't just walk away for fear of offending the badguy. It really does happen.

6. That's why a wise person who carries a concealed weapon practices...
situational awareness.

The knowledge of the use of firearms is a martial art. All martial arts classes emphasize situational awareness. Walking around with a cell phone glued to your ear is strongly discouraged.

If you do watch your environment and practice being alert, your chances of being attacked drop significantly. Muggers are predators. Predators attack the weak and the unaware both in the animal and human kingdoms.

What is Awareness?

Awareness is the ability to "read" people and situations and anticipate the probability of violence before it happens. It is knowing what to look for and taking the time to notice safety-related aspects of what is happening around you.

Awareness is not about being fearful or paranoid. It is a relaxed state of alertness that you can incorporate into your character. It is neither desirable, nor necessary, to go about life hectically scanning your surroundings for the boogey man around every corner. Your level of awareness should be appropriate to the circumstances you are in.

Some circumstances call for a greater degree of awareness than others. Obviously, you would want to be more aware when walking alone to your car at night than when shopping in a crowded mall with friends.

What is Successful Self-Defense?

How you define success determines the strategies you implement to achieve it. Many people confuse the ability to defend themselves with the ability to fight. If your image of successful self-defense is fighting off an assailant, your solution will be directed at learning physical techniques. You would be missing the point.

Success in self-defense is not winning a fight but avoiding it. The ultimate success in self-defense is when nothing to happens! If that's not possible, consider this philosophy: If you can't prevent it, avoid it. If you can't avoid it, defuse it. If you can't defuse it, escape. If you can't escape, you may have to fight your way out of the situation. If you do have to fight, it will be as a last resort, not a first.

9. And I think the numbers show that is very very rare.
I'm sure it has happened. But rare enough for it to not be a valid concern.

2. This is why it is so awful to have the Gun Group on the General postings.
It is absolutely creepy to read these posts. "Man get stomped! I got my gun!" I so wish there was a way to block the whole group. I don't like belonging to any group that includes this kind of sick stuff.

22. Reading violent trash talk on an otherwise liberal site is difficult to ignore.
Do you really agree with the OP? I am sickened by it. It makes gun people seen even more violent and dangerous than I originally perceived them to be.
I have never posted here to change any one's mind. I assume you would all die before you would give up your guns and you all seem to love to talk about how safe and great and family fun they are. But your posts appear in the general forum and other posters like me read them and respond. Every once and a while the gun posts are so noxious and selfish that someone has to respond if only for the non-deadly weapon folks to read.

That's how I interpreted the OP.

If that makes you sick, than puke away :puke:

Perhaps you read something different in the OP. DU is a big place with a lot of different views. Diversity is its strength.

33. I think you have a good point
see if the mods might move "guns" to DU Groups so others that feel that way won't have to view the headers.
Those of us that want to read it can go to the group and not bother others. Seems like a civil solution.

37. Actually it explains why people like you can not handle guns or other parts of real life
There are threads here all the time that are of no interest and are posters who are idiots. However, most of us can ignore them and not respond. Why can't you?

Its not about gun threads showing up in the latest topics, its about mature behavior.

26. Ever read the Forum Rules?
"...But please remember that this is a large and diverse community that includes a broad range of opinion. People who are easily offended, or who are not accustomed to having their opinions (including deeply personal convictions) challenged may not feel entirely comfortable here. A thick skin is necessary to participate on this or any other discussion forum."

It would appear the problem here is one's inability to censor material unsuitable to taste.
Furthermore, to compound such a lack of self-censure, is the subsequent failure to control reactionary outbursts.
Does that about sum up this subthread?

28. What is so offensive about a person wanting to have the means
to keep themselves from getting stomped?

Why is self-defense creepy?

And with all due respect, if I were part of a group that included sick stuff that I despised so much that I didn't like belonging to the group, I would leave the group. That would seem to be the obvious thing to do if I didn't like belonging to the group.

43. To be fair.. this is a not a government site..
.. it's not an organ of the state in any fashion. Rules prohibiting any subject or topic are up to the owner of this private property. Much like Starbucks could kick you out of their store for proselytizing without falling afoul of the first amendment.

Cry potential censorship yes, abridgment of rights, no.
