Would-be robber shot, run over in Detroit
http://www.freep.com/article/20100208/NEWS01/100208005/1320/Would-be-robber-shot-run-over-in-Detroit

A suspected robber was shot by his potential victim, then run over as he tried to get away early today on Detroit’s west side, according to Detroit Police.

The man in his 20s tried to rob a driver in the parking lot of a bar at Grand River and Telegraph at 1:30 a.m., police spokeswoman Eren Stephens said today, declining to release the name of the bar.

But the driver, a man in his 30s from Southfield who holds a concealed weapon license, shot the would-be robber. The wounded man ran away, then was hit by a car by a 20-year-old woman from Farmington Hills, Stephens said.

5. I don't think the Detroit News is any better.
Back in the 60s I learned that who ever writes for newspapers, never see what I see at events.

8. Robbery is by definition the use of force or threat of force in order to take property
Compare and contrast with theft.

Then, in an understandably panicked state he attempted to unass himself from the area. Throwing caution to the wind ,he forged onward directly through the path of oncoming traffic . And they ran over him .

Bet it aint the first rodeo for that clown .

9. Is this a defensive use of a gun
or a traffic fatality? I mean the car killed him.

11. More to the story
http://www.macombdaily.com/articles/2010/02/08/news/srv0000007558125.txt

A father of two who claims self defense after he allegedly shot and killed a man during a road rage incident in Clinton Township may be charged today with open murder, according to police.

The victim, a 34-year-old Shelby Township man, was shot multiple times on eastbound Hall Road (M-59) near Groesbeck Highway about 10 p.m. Saturday. He was pronounced dead at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center, police said Sunday.

"The two individuals had a traffic altercation and when both stopped at a red light, there were words exchanged and the shooter pulled out a gun and fired," Detective Capt. Richard Maierle said.

12. Interesting - So the guy who was shot had gotten out of his vehicle
It could still be a legitimate defensive shooting, but making up a bogus story about an attempted robbery would be a serious mistake.

13. I dont think your link is the same story as the OP.
Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 01:20 PM by rd_kent
The OP is about a robber in the parking lot of a bar. You story is about a traffic incedent where a man had 2 young sons in the car.

I think you are looking at a completely different story.

POSTED: 8:05 A.M. FEB. 8, 2010 | UPDATED: 3:32 P.M. TODAY
Man shot then run over at Detroit bar wasn't a robber, police conclude
Victim identified in incident outside Lucky's Pub & Grille

After interviewing witnesses and examining evidence at the scene of a shooting this morning, Detroit police have determined that a man who was shot, then run over, was not a would-be robber after all, officials said.

Two people -- the man who fired the gun, and the woman who was allegedly driving drunk when she struck the victim in the parking lot -- are in custody, said Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens. The victim was identified as Deangelo Tate.

The incident began with a fight between patrons inside Lucky's Pub and Grille at Grand River and Telegraph at about 1:30 a.m., Stephens said. The fight moved into the parking lot, at which point a 41-year-old Southfield man is accused of shooting Tate in the head.

As Tate tried to flee, a 20-year-old Farmington Hills woman pulled into the lot and struck him, Stephens said. That woman was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after a Breathalyzer test indicated she had a .19% blood-alcohol content -- more than twice Michigan's legal limit of .08%. An autopsy conducted today determined that Tate died of multiple gunshot wounds.

When investigators arrived at the scene, the 41-year-old said he opened fire because Tate was trying to rob him at gunpoint, Stephens said.

"A weapon has not been found," she said this afternoon. Detectives investigating the scene now believe there never was a robbery attempt, she added.
