Accidental shooting victim flown to Columbia hospital
A Santee woman was airlifted to a Columbia-area hospital late Wednesday after what investigators believe was an accidental shooting.

The 50-year-old woman was taken to Palmetto Health Richland where her condition is unknown, Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Keisa Peterson said.

A deputy reported speaking, “with the victim before she was transported. She repeatedly stated that the subject did not shoot her on purpose and it was an accident.”

Peterson said investigators do not suspect foul play but are still trying to determine what happened.

2. You mean people are stupid sometimes? WOW!
The NRA's Three rules of Gun Safety (You know, that EEEEEvul right-wing organization that's been promoting shooting safety since 1871) :sarcasm:

1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.

3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
Whenever you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device if possible, and, if the gun has a magazine, remove it before opening the action and looking into the chamber(s) which should be clear of ammunition. If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

Which TWO yes, TWO of these rules did the shooter not follow? Because if you only break one, you CAN'T SHOOT ANYONE BY MISTAKE!!!

Hint:
1. loaded gun that wasn't ready to be fired. -check
2. Booger-hook wasn't OFF the bang-switch until ready to fire...i.e. you've not yet acquired your target.-check
3. Gun pointed in unsafe direction -check

THREE FOR THREE!!! We have a WINNAH!! DING DING DING DING!!!!

That's right, gun safety is just that simple. Follow the three rules and I promise you, you will NEVER EVER shoot anyone on accident. Don't follow them and you're a menace to everyone around you and probably should never lift a hammer or drive a car. -You're too retarded to leave the mental facility.

Personal Responsibility: What's in you're wallet?:sarcasm:

5. Actually the key word is NEGLIGENCE
This was not an "accidental discharge." This was, as are almost all such cases, a NEGLIGENT discharge.

If you run over a pedestrian in your car and kill them because you were violating the rules of the road, you'd be prosecuted for negligent operation of a motor vehicle or some such. I fail to see why someone being every bit as negligent with a firearm should get a pass and have us just shrug and say "accidents happen."

An accidental discharge of a firearm indicates that you didn't do anything wrong. They are rare as hen's teeth and usually involve a mechanical failure.

I would say that probably 90% of all "accidental shootings," are either intentional and the victim and shooter make up before the cops get there and they both lie about it, it's a suicide attempt, or it's plain negligence. -Disregard of basic safety procedures that any 6-y/o could master with ease.

The rest fall almost completely into the category of the person missing he intended target and shooting someone behind it, either because it's a defensive use (cops do this not infrequently) or the shooter didn't see that there was someone else there when he took the shot. (common in hunting accidents). The latter two are genuine accidents that could happen to anyone under the right conditions. But they make up a tiny proportion of accidents.

In this case the shooter was drunk and screwing around with a loaded shotgun. He's been charged with disorderly conduct, a trivial misdemeanor. Luckily for him, it wasn't someone ELSE'S wife. If he'd shot me or my wife, I'd demand charges of attempted murder.

6. Sigh. Context:

The current policy of "education, not prohibition" is working...and the sky isn't falling...
