Why the NRA wants to buy media outlets (TV, radio, etc)
AP: Gun Lobby Looking to Buy Media Outlet

Sun Dec 7, 8:03 AM ET
By SHARON THEIMER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Hoping to spend as much as it wants on next year's elections, the National Rifle Association is looking to buy a television or radio station and declare that it should be treated as a news organization, exempt from spending limits in the campaign finance law.

"We're looking at bringing a court case that we're as legitimate a media outlet as Disney or Viacom or Time-Warner," the NRA's executive vice president, Wayne LaPierre, told The Associated Press.

"Why should they have an exclusive right to relay information to the public, and why should not NRA be considered as legitimate a news source as they are? That's never been explored legally," he said in an interview.

The nation's gun lobby is talking with potential investors about an NRA broadcast outlet and is considering all possible funding sources, including gun manufacturers, LaPierre said.

Their damn guns mean more to them than the carnage the bu$h administration is bestowing on America. It means NOTHING to that rotten bunch of asswipes what the bu$h nazis are doing to us,and future generations. Selfish, greedy power hungry scumbags is all they are. This line of bu$hit the repukes spew out of how those "libruls" "are gonna take our guns" is nothing but a huge lie to get that big $$$$ rolling in for campaigns and to trash their opponents with their scathing ads. They are a truly sickening breed of people. :puke:

55. Not really
I saw this quote in a sig line somewhere else and thought it fit. I think the aurthor is a conservative, but am unfamiliar with him. At any rate, that doesn't make it factually incorrect:

"As the 20th century came to a close, Canadian Justice Minister Allan Rock fended off criticisms of a gun-registration bill his government was pushing by giving assurances that "there is no reason to confiscate legally owned firearms." Within 10 months of the minister's assurances, 553,000 legally registered handguns were
confiscated."

You really ought to find out who somebody is before you quote them...Roberts is a far right wing loony who has called for "Confederate History Month," compares diversity to Nazi oppression, and delights in union bashing (especially the teachers union).

Here's a good dissection of his dishonesty on the phony "Chinagate" scandal...

http://www.dailyhowler.com/h052798_1.shtml

And he's another paid shill for the gun industry...

"Paul Craig Roberts is the John M. Olin fellow at the Institute for Political Economy....."

www.cooperativeindividualism.org/robertsbio.html

He's also a minor player in the appointistration...

http://www.uscc.gov/robe.htm

"In 1987 the French government recognized him as "the artisan of a renewal in economic science and policy after half a century of state interventionism" and inducted him into the Legion of Honor."

Wonder if he sent that back as he munched his freedom fries.

Hey, it isn't like I was trying to slip anything past anyone. I said I thought he was some sort of conservative.

But, my use of that quote was in response to the post that said words to the effect of registration leading to confiscation was hooey. Evidently, it is not hooey. What do you say to that?

41. Second half of the show
"How about a game show where contestants have to pry merchandise out of Charlton Heston's cold dead hands before the clock runs out and the celebrity judges (John Lott, Ted Nugent and Robert Blake) start shooting?"

And for the second half of the show, contestants have to pry spoons from Rosie O'Donnell's hands before the clock runs out and they have to choose between being shot in the back by an anti-gunner(million mom murderer Barbara Graham(lipscomb)), shot in the face by an anti-gunner(convicted attempted murderer turned gun controller Amy fisher), or lied to by anti-gunner Michael Bellesiles saying "the whole show never happened and you win nothing".

Parting gifts provided by brady/hci/vpc to be handed out by Sara brady, and Josh Sugarman(to the survivors):

Brady/hci/vpc miseducational propaganda pamphlets, million mom march t-shirts, and Autographed copies of Arming America.

In my best Rod Roddy voice(former price is right announcer, may he RIP):

We'll see you next time on Dir-r-r-ty Laundry!!!

36. For everyone who wants to tell the NRA "No"..
...you cant do that.

I can understand you wanting to. But in the end, what they are doing is perfectly legal and legitimate. In your eyes it may be the equivilent of the KKK getting a TV channel, but that is their right. If they have the money to do so and comply with regulations they are exercising their first ammendmant rights.

To insist that they shouldnt be able to because you dont agree with their message is very anti-freedom. You cant call yourself "pro freedom" and only support the freedoms you want.

As you may know, there are lots of oppressive governments out there..but they'll let you say anything you want on TV..as long as what you want to say is in accordance with their ideals.

"You can do what you want. But only if you want what I do."

Doesnt work that way.

I for one am hoping that the present owners of the media outlets will live up to their responsibilities as trustees of the public airwaves and not sell to an organization that is out to create yet another right-wing propaganda machine.

But I'm not calling on the government to block it. THAT would be censorship.

When I read "Society Would Be Better Served...if the NRA Channel was prevented from ever existing." it sounded like a call to action, but now I see what you mean about it not being the government.

Still, for us to even toy with the idea of speech being prevented, is, I think, a Bad Thing, and antithetical to our foundation of liberty. Speaking generically, I think that keeping the marketplace of ideas free and open is the only way to go. I would love to see the communist and socialist parties and the kkk go away and not get their message out, but I know it would be wrong for me to work to prevent their speech, even though I think them subversive and a danger to society.

59. Ken Starr Bit Another Big One
Well now we KNOW why the NRA wants a TV station to blare lies....guess they should have hired a real lawyer and not the nation's chief crotch-sniffer....

"The Supreme Court today upheld the most important provisions of the McCain-Feingold campaign reform act of 2002, an attempt to control the unregulated, uncontained and often underground system of fund-raising and spending that now dominates federal election campaigns.
The decision means the current election campaign can proceed without interruption under the new law, according to attorneys on both sides of the case.
Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist dissented from the primary holdings, along with Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony M. Kennedy and Clarence Thomas. "

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A52529-2003Dec10.html

Well, cheer up, gunboys....maybe this unelected drunk will appoint a crooked piece of shit like Ed Meese or "Cross-burning Charlie" Pickering to the court and the gun lobby will get its wish...
