4. Cars aren't designed for the express purpose of killing things.
Just to repeat the obvious for brain addled gun worshipers.

8. and yet, they manage to kill so many more
won't even ask about the numbers maimed today

And pointing out some facts about the numbers does not make one a brain addled gun worshiper. One might actually worship applied logic.

12. If guns were...
...as easy to get as cars, more people would die by gunshot.

Speaking of facts, why don't you present some?

9. And they STILL take a higher toll in lives than guns do
When something that isn't designed to kill still manages to be used to kill more people than something that is, which is the greater threat. Add to that almost all motor vehicle-related fatalities are unintentional (there are only about 30-40 vehicular homicides a year), i.e. hardly anyone wants to kill people with a car, and still the death toll from motor vehicle collisions is over half again as large as the death toll from GSWs.

And the fact that a firearm is capable of inflicting lethal trauma can be used for good as well as ill. It can be used to stop criminals by threat or use of force, which is why law enforcement has them. Just to point out the even more obvious.

And honestly, if we're not allowed to use the term "hoplophobe," why the hell are terms like "gun nut," "gun hugger" and "gun worshipper" perfectly kosher?

13. The gun is...
...the greater threat because it's sole purpose is to kill.

"And the fact that a firearm is capable of inflicting lethal trauma can be used for good as well as ill."
So you think lethal trauma is a good thing?

"Hoplophobe" is a term made up by a "gun hugger".

19. I don't see how that follows
Accepting provisionally, for the sake of the argument, that the sole purpose of a gun is to kill, whereas the intended purpose of a motor vehicle is something other than to kill; and given that the overwhelming majority of deaths resulting from GSWs are intentional, whereas all but a handful of motor vehicle collision deaths are unintentional; given all that, 2006 (most recent year available on WISQARS) saw 27,674 deaths, intentionally inflicted with a class of device notionally intended for that specific purpose (plus 642 unintentional deaths), whereas he same year saw 45,316 deaths, unintentionally inflicted using a class of devices not intended for that purpose. Half again as many deaths, without anybody even deliberately trying!

By contrast, a large number of the intentional deaths inflicted using firearms might quite readily be performed by other means if the firearm were not available; what really matters is that there is intent to inflict harm, and once that intent exists, a means will be usually be found.

Do I think lethal trauma is a good thing? No, but I think it can be the (much) lesser of two evils. For example, if a criminal assault has as the possible outcomes either that the victim ends up in a wheelchair for life, or that the assailant(s) are prevented from inflicting permanent injury by being fatally shot, my preference goes toward the latter. But more to the point, a firearm's capability of inflicting lethal trauma makes it a credible deterrent, which means that an assailant may be driven to flight or surrender without anyone actually being physically harmed. Which is, in fact, how at least 92% of defensive gun uses pan out (or so criminological research indicates).

7. So tell me, rfranklin
How come you're berating Dave for posting all those stories of firearms being used in self-defense--which is one of the explicitly stated purposes of this forum--but don't berate onehandle for starting a ton of threads of new reports of criminal misuse etc. of firearms?
