In 1994 the Assault Weapon Ban became law. Thanks to the technical incompetence of the gun control crowd, it accomplished nothing except to send a shock wave through voting gun owners. The years since then have seen an amazing progress of legislation and court decisions favorable toward gun-rights.
The bill to reauthorize the AWB died in committee. The new, tougher AWB died in committee. Dozens of states have changed their laws on concealed carry, going from “no issue” or “may issue” to “shall issue” and dozens of those states now have reciprocity agreements to honor each other’s CCWs. Some governors, who stood in the way of allowing citizens to carry concealed, were swept from office by the voters. Sadly, one of those was Ann Richards of Texas, replaced by George W. Bush. If Richards had signed the bill, Bush would probably never have become governor. We have the gun control crowd to thank for the rise of Bush. Significantly, none of the “shall-issue” states have rescinded their new laws.
With 40 states now being “shall issue” and two other states not requiring a license to carry, that means that 80 Senators and most Congresspersons are from pro-gun states and districts. Numerous states have adopted Castle Doctrine laws and “Stand Your Ground” laws.
Congress passed, in 2005, with 59 Democratic Congresspersons voting for it, and Reid in the Senate supporting it, Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. It stopped the frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers which were intended to bankrupt the industry.
Congress, with then Senator Obama voting for it, acted to stop guns from being confiscated during local disasters, as was done in New Orleans following Katrina.
The Supreme Court found the Second Amendment to be an individual right.
The Supreme Court has accepted a case that is expected to result in the Second Amendment being incorporated against the states.
Dozens of states have filed briefs in support of incorporation.
National Parks will now follow the same gun laws as the state that the park is in.
Guns can now be transported in checked baggage on Amtrak.
Various public opinion polls show increasing support for gun-rights.
During all of this, the streets didn’t suddenly run with blood. In fact, during that time, while gun sales increased, and millions of Americans became licensed to carry concealed, the crime rate (Including murder) dropped dramatically.
What other gun-rights victories have I missed?
