Should I sell some guns now to buy a guitar? Guitar prices - used and vintage -
are down, and I'm very tempted to sell some guns - privately if possible - to fund a guitar purchase. Problem is, of course, I won't have those guns....

I'm wondering how long the lower prices will last - I could save a few thousand over maybe a year or so....

I just paid off all my credit cards in Juns, and won't have any more, ever.

2. As an investment vehicle or for fun?
If it's income that you won't miss / aren't counting on as an investment instrument, pick whichever one gives you more joy.

If it is an investment, I'm not qualified to comment, as the relative appreciation of value of musical instruments is outside my expertise.

10. No, I play and have for over 40 years - I am playing more now that I have
retired, and I'm looking for something very special.

4. Guitars have been historically good investments....
You can almost be guaranteed to break even at the very least.

I bought a 1966 Fender Bassman amplifier back in 1995 for $100, and was offered $1200 for it yesterday.

11. My point, in a way - I bought a Gibson Les Paul Custom made in '69.
I bought it in about '76 for $400, with case. Now they are around $6500. Of course, I sold it decades ago....

I want to be 1 GREAT guitar to play while I still can.

5. Sell some guns...You can only........
use one at a time anyway...unless you are very coordinated.
Of course the same thing goes for guitars.

6. What could you get
a 1940's Martin for? We have one in the family now. My Grandparents found on the side of hiway on their way to California in the early 40's. Was in original case.
I am sure someone's heart was broken.

7. If it's the right model, the sky is the limit pretty much.
In 1996 played a late '30's martin at Gruhns in Nashville that Clapton ended up buying for 40 grand....I have NO idea what it would be worth now.....

That guitar was a fairly spectacular instrument.

8. Martin Guitars
Depending on the condition and year, 1940s Martins sell for $10,000 to $40,000. They are highly sought-after. Check out Gruhn Guitars in Nashville to see what the going rate is.

14. There's a 1940's Martin in a local shop....
It isn't in the greatest condition, and it's got a $25K price tag on it.

Looks like gun prices are starting to return to normal.

who stumbled onto a '73 tobacco ES335 at a great price, some time ago. I've always thought if I could afford/justify a rock guitar it would be a SG or a Tele. I know the Tele is usually considered a twangy country guitar, but you sure see a lot of them rocking.

$0.02

on edit: not that the 335 doesn't do rock.

16. I have a Tele, a Strat, 2 oriental SG's and several acoustics - I'm
thinking either a Gibson SG or a Les Paul.
I'm an old bass player, too.
The 335 is a great guitar, too..... I should have been born rich instead of beautiful.

21. I played a 335 last night. Sweet...
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 07:34 AM by jeepnstein
I'm a Telecaster or acoustic kind of guy but if I found a 335 at a good price I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. With the exception of my duty weapon and backup I use my guitars far more than any of the guns I own. I'm on the prowl for a D18 but don't need to be in a hurry.

Oh, and if you are really into Gibsons you'll want to check out their latest offering. Trim your fingernails first since you'll probably want to claw your eyes out. http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/jimi-hendrix-electric-guitar-packages-220786

I'm sorry to have to do that to you. :puke:

22. You might want to look at some of the hollow-body Epiphones -
they are just great guitars, and cost less than my car, unlike Gibsons. I like the Rivera, Casino and Dot Epi's.

25. OK - Check the Agile's - they make a Les Paul in Korea that some say
is better than the Gibson original.

I like cheap, too.
It's about what I can afford, and why I'm selling the guns to buy a real Gibson...

13. I think this is a good time to sell off extra firearms and buy other things that you want
Prices of all types of firearms are pretty inflated right now.

It's a good time to go pawnshopping.

Pawn shop owner said he would make me a deal. It looked nice, and according to Dave Petzal, Rifle Editor for F & S, the Savage 99s are going up fast.

nickel plated from the 1970's.

Should get enough $ to start guitar shopping.
Thanks for the responses.

17. Sure, why not?
I'm seriously considering selling a couple to pick up a bass. Gun prices are just crazy right now. I have a bunch of junkers that I've accumulated through the years and they'll probably get sold in the not-too-distant future.

Not even a nibble - but I do see a ton of other guns for sale....maybe I'm a little late selling them?

27. Listed 2 guns, got absolutely no real interest despite nearly 400 hits.
I find local gun shop is buying stuff very cheap now - too many out of work folks selling off guns for rent and food, etc. He says it's actually not a good time to sell - marked is flooded.

Maybe I'll just save up some cash and take my chances for 10 monthe or so.

30. SE Pennsylvania - Location always has a bearing, especially on prices -
we are usually pretty low because there are very many guns available, and a lot of us boomers are selling because we no longer hunt, etc. I think the economy is forcing a lot of sales, same as with guitars, which is great for the dealers, bad for the private seller...nothing new, really - dealers have the marked locked up, make a profit no matter what.

32. sell them at the gunshow
Take them to the next gunshow and sell them there. There are plenty of people there to sell to. If you walk around and see what the dealers are selling them for then go just a little less, personal buyers will be all over you. And the best thing is, its legal, there is no such thing as a "gunshow loophole". If its legal to sell the gun to someone outside the gun show then its legal in the gunshow. Just remember to check your local state laws. Its legal in Oklahoma.
