Over One Million NICS Checks Last Month Alone
Washington, DC --(AmmoLand.com)- Data released by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reported 1,074,757 checks in August 2009, a 12.3 percent increase from the 956,872 reported in August 2008.
So far that is roughly 9,076,205 gun bought this year! The total is probably more as NICS background checks may cover the purchase of more than one gun at a time.

This latest jump in background checks show that Americans are solidly in-favor of keeping firearms in the hands of law abiding citizens and clearly shows that proponents claiming the USA wants more gun control are blatantly wrong.

Conservative estimates of legally owned guns in the USA put the number at 355,029,250 million guns in the USA. That is 1.17 guns for everyone in the USA and if you listen to the liberal press they are all assault weapons. God bless anyone who tries to invade the USA…

http://www.ammoland.com/2009/09/04/1000000-guns-added-to-american-homes/
I also read a statistic that said that over 9 MILLION NICS checks had been done since the election

How's that for economic stimulus?

5. The NRA is far to busy waisting money calling me four times a day...
for several weeks attempting to get a donation, to spend money on posters on DU.

8. Actually, gun controllers are paid by the NRA...
A number of editorial cartoonists, when they created an anti-gun-owner piece for some daily in the 80s and 90s, were paid copyright fees by the NRA for re-publication in their magazines and literature.

Why don't you draw one up and get in on the act? There's money to be made.

Joyce Foundation has plenty of money to throw around for anything anti-gun.

2. I'm afraid that
the fact that people are buying guns says nothing about how we in general feel about gun control. What it does suggest is that people are afraid they're going to lose the right to own and carry because that's what the right-wingers have been suggesting will happen during a liberal presidency. Question is, do YOU believe that?

3. I sincerely doubt any of the current Democrats in power are stupid
enough to attempt any type of gun control/confiscation program - both the right and the left would explode.
I also have little doubt that at least half those background checks/guns are going to Democrats.

One of those nine million NICS checks since the election was mine.
I was buying what I think of as my "Glenn Beck" gun.

If I had the money, I'd buy another one. It should be noted though that not all of those are new guns, that figure includes used gun sales and transfers. Mine was a 1967 Enfield rifle.

13. Most used sales DON'T go through NICS
Private sales are unregulated in most of the U.S. I don't think I've bought a gun since the election but ALL of mine are private sales.

18. Plenty of used firarms are sold in gunshops, pawn shops, and online
all of which require an NICS check.

22. Exactly. And some states require NICS for private sales.
Mine was a private sale, but because it was online it went through a dealer and thus an NICS check.

27. Some state CHL's exempt a person from NICS. I've made two purchases
since last November and was exempt from NICS on both of them. Still had to fill out the yellow sheet but no NICS.

23. Depends where you live. Here in PA, ALL handgun sales go through
the check - all must be done through a dealer. Long guns - rifles and shotguns - can be sold personally without record or check.

I expect there is a lot of that happening now.

26. Most used guns are trough a FFL dealer. Very few are private transfer
outside the NICS area.

4. We? Who are you talking about? Certainly not average Americans.
Most people are not in favor of more gun control. But WE are in favor of enforcing gun laws and reducing gun crimes.

24. Not the same thing at all.....I don't believe anyone is in favor of more crime.
FWIW, according tho the '09 annual FBI Crime report violent crime is again at the lowest level since they began to record it in 1973.

7. If Obama wasn't so involved in fighting for healthcare reform...
and attempting to find a way to fix the mess left behind by Bush the Junior, he might have some interest in implementing new gun control measures.

I don't foresee any new gun laws until his second administration and I don't foresee any truly draconian laws. To many elected Democrats support RKBA. Elected officials in the very liberal big cities with stiff gun laws are safe to promote Brady Campaign "feel good" laws. Elected officials in many areas with more liberal gun laws understand that to support new gun control schemes might cost them their seat.

9. The odds of gun-control legislation passing in the next few years are slim...
That said, the explicit call for an "assault weapons" ban (more comprehensive and permanent) remains as I write this in the DNC platform. At last reading, Obama's own web site also includes a call for an "assault weapons" ban.

So, I "believe" the DNC does not at this time have the power -- only the teeth-grinding will -- to pass more gun-control legislation. The DNC and gun-control politicians within the Democratic Party are more than willing to go for it again if they have the votes. That is why the Democrats, exhibiting a profound foolishness, keep their little gems deeply riveted into the Party structure; it's almost like they are inviting confrontation. And we know how that results. The GOP also knows this and acts accordingly.

The question is do YOU believe these flagrant calls for prohibition are doing Democrats any good? Do YOU believe in these bans?

12. Do I believe that
No, I think that the number of people buying guns from both ends of the political spectrum has sent a message to congress in general that stricter gun laws are the third rail. IMO this is a good thing

But places like D/U can help spread the word that a whole bunch of Dems support their freedom to own firearms which make that work much easier

25. Keep in mind that there are more gun sales out there than just what NICS shows. Many
State CHL's (like Texas) exempt a person from NICS. I think I've purchased two firearms since November that did not have a NICS check on them. (because I'm exempt from the NICS not because of a "black market" purchase)
