Daly's anti-gun empire crumbling?
Edited on Mon Jul-20-09 08:58 AM by TPaine7
PEORIA —

Talk of bringing concealed-carry legislation to Illinois gives many residents a fear of the unknown.

Several local police chiefs and other personnel said putting fear into the minds of criminals on the streets is also one of the best arguments for allowing concealed carry.

"If you're not sure if a guy has a gun, you may not try to do some things to him that you might otherwise try to get away with," said Peoria police Officer Troy Skaggs, president of the Peoria Police Benevolent Union. "It's the fear of the unknown."

....

In February, the Illinois Sheriffs' Association passed a resolution supporting a concealed-carry law in Illinois, with several conditions in place.

Then in May, Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis expressed public support for Peoria becoming a test city for statewide legislation that would allow people to carry guns in a responsible way.

During a recent 10-week stint at the FBI's National Academy, which brought 250 worldwide law-enforcement executives to Quantico, Va., Peoria Police Chief Steven Settingsgaard said, "Everyone I spoke to was in favor of concealed carry."

One of the favorite excuses of the antis--"the brave police officers who protect and serve our communities oppose the Constitution"--seems to be falling.

This is great stuff. Heads over at Brady must be exploding.

1. 9 shot in one hour this weekend
They had a series of shootings, gang related according to the police, that wounded 9 people, including a 9 year old girl (a different 9 year old than the one that was wounded last week) in less than 1 hour.

Daley will undoubtedly show up at a microphone somewhere to rail against gun violence, deride Congress and the state legislature (which he unofficially runs) for not passing more gun laws that would solve his gang problem.

So once again in our fair city with a complete ban on handguns, we are treated to another round of violence and, as usual, it's the gun and gun owners fault. If the gun owners downstate didn't insist on using semi-automatic target rifles, somehow that would solve the problem of criminals in Chicago shooting people with handguns, ... that they aren't allowed to have anyway.

That's Daley logic at work.

9. Sorry to disappoint you but ...
... they propose one every year and every year the downstate Dems defeat it easily.

The support and strength for the pro-gun owners side has been growing. In March the Illinois State Rifle Assn. turned out over 5,000 members in Springfield. The Illinois version of the Brady Bunch turned out 60 people two weeks later and they had to use City of Chicago buses and school children that were given a day off to protest. So why are you so against the will of an obvious majority?

But I'm curious, are you as thick as Daley seems to be about the issue?

The crimes are being committed with cheap (and not so cheap) handguns, in a city that banned all handguns 20 years ago.

Why do you think that banning the most popular target rifles used in competition at a rifle range in Bonfield Illinois, AR-15s, would have any impact on crime or public safety?

Or would it just make you "feel" safer?

15. Not really, you make people have to do crazy stuff like this..
All these are CA legal variants of the AR-15- off-list receivers with no 'evil features'.

16. Actually the CA law is easily bypassed.
What and how the legislature decided what was an assault weapon is even sillier

You might change your point of view once you understand the issue better.

18. Two serious questions for you
Would you say the rifles shown in post #15 are 'safer' (for want of better term) than those not legal
in California?

If so, why?

10. Ban muskets too
they're used to commit almost as many crimes.

And anvils hanging above peoples heads by thin strings, I've seen alot of documentary footage where that leads to disaster for some unlucky soul. Unless they have an umbrella of course . . .

13. That's Daley's "logic"
Make me register/turn in/have confiscated my AR-15s, Garands and M-1 Carbines and somehow that will stop a gang banger in Austin from shooting up a rival with a rented Jennings Bryco 9 mm.

But it does give him political cover in ethnic neighborhoods where he can claim he's doing "everything he can" and it's that damn Congress and Statehouse that keeps blocking his efforts to "save the children" by passing more gun control laws.

The irony is his family vacation and supposed retirement home is in Michigan, a shall issue state.

Then everyone quietly ignores the fact that the police have now gone 3 years without a contract and he keeps cutting the force to meet budget reductions and demanding unpaid time off for cops.

Guess which neighborhoods experience the greatest cuts in cops on the street?

4. I would be interested in seeing a nationwide gun ban.
For academic reasons, of course.

After the handful of sheepishly lawful citizens turned in their guns, and after the rash of, umm... robberies that would undoubtedly occur before the ban went into effect, we would get to see every gun in the nation disappear off of registries. Then, the underground gun trade would flourish, and gun crimes committed with untraceable guns would skyrocket.

I think that's the most likely immediate result.

Anyone care to extrapolate past that?

11. Then the public outcry
from law abiding citizens who were forced to give up their guns and are now being victimized by the criminal element (adding to the black market always increases crime rates; prohibition, war on drugs, etc) would demand stricter measures to cut down on the exploding crime rate.

This would lead to draconian punishments and "selective" alterations to search and seizure laws. Afterall, the most important thing is keeping people safe, not protecting their rights, the nation wide gun ban is proof of this. Meaning the police would be free to search any car, home, or individual they please to root out contraband weapons. Cameras would need to be installed in public areas to keep an eye on people.

In short, the average gun-grabbers fantasy come true.
