BBC news-Border defense: Enforce current gun laws
Enforce current gun laws, sure that sounds reasonable.

Now problem is that some of these strawman purchases simply move a little further up north.

"ATF is to send 100 agents to the border within 45 days to crack down on illegal gun transfers from the US into Mexico."

1. What a pathetic announcement given ATF failure in the X-Caliber gun store case.

2. I hear you jody...
...but cosider the alternative--More restrictive gun laws?

At least having more field agents will help them perfect and/or improve their systems of checks (or lack thereof).

3. It'll either...
make or break the conspiracy theory about the drug cartels buying full auto at retail prices.

I suspect they'll find that many of the Latinos who took the time and trouble to fill out a 4473 at a legal dealer's shop and pass NICS either still have the gun or "gave" it to a relative. Maybe the relative is in the United States, maybe not. I wonder how many .38 Supers are being sold in the South West these days?

4. I keep hearing rumors that the "assault weapons" ...
are being bought for self defense by the citizens in Mexico that are not involved in the drug trade.

The drug cartels are using the full auto or burst fire assault rifles.

The fact are; the firearms BATFE is referring to are used by petty thieves in Mexico, kidnappers, and weapons confiscated from citizens by local law enforcement officials, whose only crime was seeking self-defense for themselves and their families. That is a completely different issue. Firearms do move to Mexico, but the vast majority has nothing to do with drug cartels. It has everything to do with a demand for firearms by otherwise law-abiding Mexican citizens, particularly the middle and upper-class.

If I lived in Mexico, I would want something to defend my family.

5. TX asks Napolitano for 1,000 border guards but
her priority is 100 ATF agents.
