New strategy for gun crime police (UK)
Police tackling gun crime and gangs in England and Wales can learn from counter-terrorism strategies, senior officer, Sir Ken Jones, has said.

Sir Ken, chairman of the Association of Chief Police Officers, compared efforts to combat radicalisation with measures to divert young men from joining gangs.

...

It urged police to study government strategies to counter extremism.

Sir Ken said: "In examining gang culture, we have noted emerging thinking on combating radicalisation identifies some common causal factors.

"We are keen to explore any such synergies to improve our understanding of how crime phenomena reflect deeper social problems.

"In fact, the Prevent approach to counter terrorism has much to offer."

1. "We are keen"
"We are keen to explore any such synergies to improve our understanding of how crime phenomena reflect deeper social problems."

Looks like someone is actually starting to use their brain: weapons don't cause crime, social problems cause crime.

2. I agree that weapons don't cause crime, but
I don't agree that social problems cause crime.
I think individual decisions that each individual makes cause, or prevent crime.
It's nice to blame 'society' or the school, or schools, or the educational system, or the church, or something or somebody else, but the blame is with the individual who makes that decision to do whatever it is they do.
And it's always nice to look for a simple, easy, magic wand solution, like a 'law' or pay the teachers more money, or more churches, or fewer churches, but that won't make individual decisions by independent individual persons.
There are extremely poor people in many places in the world who never commit crimes. They don't have the greed that so many criminals have.
Or they don't have the idea that so many others have that 'society' owes them something, and if they don't get it, then they have the right to go out and 'take' it one way or another.

3. This makes sense but
these people who make decisions have to get their values from someplace. Granted not every person will be a good guy if exposed to a good environment, but a whole bunch of them would. When mom and dad are putting for the the attitude of "every man for himself" and "take whatever you can get away with" the kids are going to believe it.And they will follow the same path.
