Alabama Gunman kills 10
Alabama coroner: 'He cleaned his family out'
Gunman kills 10, including several family members, before taking own life

GENEVA, Ala. - Authorities were working Wednesday to determine why a gunman set off on a rampage, killing 10 people across two counties before taking his own life.

The shooting was believed to be the worst mass killing by a single gunman in Alabama's history. The gunman's mother, four other relatives and the wife and child of a local sheriff's deputy were among the dead.

"He cleaned his family out," Coffee County Coroner Robert Preachers said. "We don't know what triggered it."

The shootings happened Tuesday afternoon in a mostly rural area near the Florida border, and were believed to be the work of Michael McLendon, a man in his 20s who lived with his mother and once worked at a local metal plant.

The spree began around 3:30 p.m. when McLendon burned down his mother's house in Kinston. Coffee County Sheriff Dave Sutton said McClendon put his mother, Lisa McLendon, on an L-shaped couch, pilled stuff on top of her and set her afire. He said McClendon also shot four dogs at the house.

1. Per Skinner's directive tacked at the top of this forum...

Discussion of gun-related public policy issues or the use of firearms for self-defense belong in the Guns Forum.

How about adding some value along those lines for us, TWiley? Otherwise, this is just another misplaced GD topic.

2. This is the gun forum is it not?
Why discuss blue sky when regulation is needed for the occasional tornado?

3. Firearms are regulated
The story boils down to this:

A psychotic man went berzerk and misused a firearm to murder a bunch of people including his mother, whose body he set on fire. His crime spree was stopped by a bunch of sane, good people with firearms.

And your point is...?

5. Counting down to an e-mail from Brady too
I expect to get one of their "Tragedy = Donation time" e-mails today or tomorrow at the latest.

With Virginia Tech they sent out e-mails soliciting donations the day after the shootings, before they even had a final victim count. I expect the same from them again. They are pretty consistently tasteless and heartless when it comes to what they see as an opportunity.
