1. Congrats
I don't own a weapon and never have -- never will either.

But, I support the rights of responsible people to own firearms (note: Elmer Fudd Cheney is NOT a responsible firearm user).

Enjoy

2. Good on ya. I just find that so, well, "odd"...I have always (for 65 years) lived in
places where nobody needed any kind of permits to own guns (except for automatics) and a majority of people had them. Of course now and then criminals get their hands on one and go nutz but they use knives to commit mayhem too.

3. I own a Kimber, they are well made.
Mine is the "pro-carry II" model in .45 acp, very light pistol but has a very manageable recoil. Did you have to get three letters of recommendation from non family members in order to get the permit? I have a friend up in Rochester who said he would have to do that in order to get a permit.

4. I live in NY State. What is the procedure for getting a pistol permit?
and why did it cost so much?

10. NYS Pistol Permit...
Edited on Fri May-23-08 07:49 AM by jmg257
Typically similar, but things are done at the county level...It has been a while, so someone can correct this.

Obtain and fill out the application(s) - these are multiple copies (2?) of the same long form. My county charges a fee for the packet. There is usually also an application/fingerprint fee. Several personal character references (1-4) will probably be required. Reasons must be given for wanting/needing the permit. There are 2 types - Premises or Carry. (BTW - choose "carry"). Used to be black ink is required on all forms.

Part of the application process includes background checks by New York State and the FBI. 2 sets of finger print cards are necessary (included in packet); sometimes these prints can be done by the local police, or by the county sheriff where applying etc. Check with your county permit clerk.

You will need 2 passport type photos.

Once all necessary background checks are completed, the application is then submitted for consideration by one of the Licensing Judges. Sometimes an interview by the local police, or by the judge is required.

There is a mandatory Handgun Safety class required, these usually cost something.

Once approved, you will get notice to buy or cross-register a handgun. You MUST get one within a certain time. Info on that pistol specifics are sent to the county, and finally a permit and purchase coupon will be issued to you, for THAT pistol. Each new purchase is an amendment to the existing permit.

There are full carry permits and then there are restricted carry permits - all up to the judge.

Seems process time is like 6-9 months for most counties.

5. Exellent choice,
Always, always, ALWAYS, start with a .22 . That is the cartridge that teaches you how to shoot. Eventually, though you are going to want to trade up, I suspect. So I want to ask you: can you convert that to another caliber, say .45ACP by swapping out some interchangeable parts, or will you need to invest in a whole new weapon.

Note: For those looking for a platform from which to fire both .22 and larger caliber rounds, I suggest taking a look at the CZ75B range of sidearms. A 9mm pistol can be purchased and easily converted to .22 with the addition of what is known as a "Kadet Kit." This is not technically a firearm and can be purchased by anyone, avoiding additional hassle and a new shooter can simply strip off the original upper and swap in the .22 kit before ever firing the thing, allowing time to build solid marksmanship fundamentals and develop good shooting habits with a great little cartridge.

9. Yeah,
It looks like the thing is made out of a lot of aluminum. Not a problem with a .22, but would probably beat itself into submission if fired with a .45 upper.
As for the wanting to keep it original, I wouldn't be so sure about maintaining your position on that one ;). Since this is your first pistol and you haven't had it long, I would suspect that you don't quite have the bug yet, but a lot of times people decide to modify their weapons, especially their handguns, to make them more "mine." Maybe it will happen, maybe it won't; either way, enjoy your new purchase and safe shooting!

14. My newest
is a CZ75D PCR, I bought it because I have had the 97B for a few years now, and I keep getting baaaad envy every time someone posts about their 75B-series pistol, so I went for it and got it. Really wanted a 9x19 CZ, and now I am saving up for a Kadet Kit, I will be able to get so much more trigger time in with that.

7. Please let me know where to send money for your prison commissary.
Because, as you know, now that you've getting weapon, you'll have this strange, overpowering urge to kill those in your household, small pets, neighbors, etc...everyone knows guns do that to people, right? :sarcasm:

8. I hear one can keep this from happening
by storing the gun in tin foil when not in use. It blocks the mind-control waves from coming out. And when it's not in the foil...well...maybe the ear plugs at the range can help. We have to be careful, they're tricky :P

13. So glad I live in Maine
Ownership/purchase- All Federal laws apply. that's about it.
Concealed Carry Permit- $35 initial, good for four years, $25 renewal, must take a handgun safety class or something similiar, like the NRA Basic Pistol course, or have a DD 214. And they must put in your hands either your permit or a letter explaining why you were denied within 30 days of application.

Sorry it's so tough in NY!

19. .22s are the shit
When I lived in South Dakota $15 would get me a brick of ammo (500 rounds for $10.99), the range fee ($2), and a fill-up of my 64oz. soda mug.

Took about 2 hours to burn up the ammo. :-)
