Poll question: Poll: Should we reduce the number of 'incident' posts?
Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 05:02 PM by FlashHarry
I've noticed that there have been a whole slew of 'so-and-so-killed-with-a-gun' and 'so-and-so-killed-with-something-other-than-a-gun' posts.

Do you guys think this is a good thing, or do you think that this trend has played itself out?

Vote away!

:hi:

(By the way, you guys have been pretty good lately... Thanks!)

On edit: When I say 'reduce,' I don't mean forcibly. I mean voluntarily, of course!

1. I voted keep them coming
otherwise it could get kind of boring here. Maybe sit a limit that way there are not to many arguements going on at once.

Personally, I believe in hands-off moderating––unless, of course, somebody starts acting like a jerk. If you guys don't mind; I don't mind.

2. it sure would be nice
if the incidents were reported, if reported they must be, as a focal point for discussion of some specific relevant issue ...

7. That's What I'm Trying to Do
So starting today, I will try to frame the discussion as I post a thread.

4. I have a problem with them only if they are without comment
Simply passing on information in the news never seems to provide a good starting point for constructive discussion.

I say if you are going to print an anecdote at least say SOMETHING about how it relates to a political issue.

5. They Should Be Current
For instance, I get mine from the News page on Google - I never post anything more than 24 hours old.

6. I voted enough
but i really dont care. You just have to sort through the horseshit to find the real threads. We can continue to post who died from guns bats, knives, death by automobile and strangulation all day long.

8. I voted enough for several reasons, among them
Is that it tends to clutter the board. Justice/Pubic Safety should (in theory) encompass more issues than gun control. Certianly people have more dimentions than that. I'd like to see more posts on prohibition and the drug war. There are strong parallels between the alcohol prohibition and the current drug prohibition, and one of them is the increase in violent crime associate with the black market. Anyone can see how this relates to gun control.

The other reason is it is somewhat morbid to post a thread for every accidental death and premeditated murder. The obvious point is 'look how bad guns are' but there are always motives behind crimes, and usually negligence behind accidents. I'll say what I've said before, that gun control treats the symptom but not the disease. After a while it just looks petty, like a bunch of people crying big crocdile tears over tragedy to get their pet issue addressed by the legislature. The news media tends to sensationalize everything. For some reason you don't hear about how many children are killed in automobile accidents or by accidents in the home. All of these things are tragic and while it's okay to bring attention to a particular example for debate purposes, over-doing it doesn't improve debate.

9. I think these posts make the person posting them look pathetic
For most of the time they have no argument, they are simply wallowing in the blood of people killed in order to distract from the fact they have no argument.

10. Man in the moon got it right
You look silly when you post news involving events you really do not understand. If you just want to bang the anti-gun drum and not discuss guns and learn about them from the people who know them, then I would say why bother? Isn't your real concern violence and not stupidity carried out by rabbit hunters?

If everyone agrees, than someone is redundant and not needed.

11. What Is There Not to Understand????
Someone got hold of a gun, and someone else died. Not to hard to grasp that absic concept.

However, I will be changing my posting method starting tomorrow. I will start a single thread called "Guns In The News" with that day's date. Each story will appear as a reply to the original message. Those who wish to add comments can do that by replying to each story. I think this will reduce the clutter on the board.

12. That's a great idea!
It might be a good idea for the RKBA folks to do the same.
