Has Bush already decided to attack Iran?
My hunch is that he has. Anybody else?

1. According to Seymour Hersch, it will happen in June., and was planned
long ago.

2. I believe the attack was planned at least 12 years ago.
But probably not by Bush, originally.

3. I get the feeling that it's not directly...
In other words,

I think he's going to get the Israelis (sp?) to do it. If it comes from them, he can say that it wasn't him.

Targeted strikes on major defensive systems and infrastructure would allow us to delay sticking a flag in Iran for a little bit longer.

I wonder if that wasn't a topic with the Saudi vist. "Hey, I'm going to have Iran attacked by Israel. You get to complain about them, AND profit when oil goes way up in price. Ok?"

"Sounds good, but we get to complain about the USA giving them all the weapons they needed. We'll blame you, and increase hatred of you everywhere."

"What was that? I was chewing. Whatever, just as long as you're ok with it."

My friends at work have decided that I've gotten more cynical since November of last year...

10. It could start as bombing...
...after that, Bush could do three things:

--"Pull an Afghanistan" by cutting back troop levels in Iraq down from the current inadequate level down to a level that would basically turn many areas to the control of the insurgents and/or warlords. But so long as things could be held together in Baghdad, Bush could pretend that freedom is "still on the march."

--Enact a limited draft, but do it in an odd way and call it something else.

--Hire mercenaries from overseas. In a world in which billions live on less than $2 a day, we could find a lot of folks willing to fight for a U.S. soldier's wages. Bush could then spin that as conformation that the "people of the world" are behind "our quest for liberty" and "American values." After all, he'll say, look at how many are willing to join our great cause!

7. Attack Iran in June?
That would be like attacking Russia in October. Way stupid.

I do think the attack will come in February or March of next year. The Mullah Fundies are having too much fun pulling W's chain and parading their intent to build nukes. I doubt they have the technical capacity (It is more complicated than just mixing a cake) to build anything yet. They could build a Hiroshima bomb if they had the right materials, but they don't. They have to go for a Nagasaki type, and that require lots of technical skills that a theocracy like Iran tends to discourage.

12. See related thread: DU War Pool: When will we fire the first shot at Iran?

DU War Pool: When will we fire the first shot at Iran?

Rules of engagement:

1) Pick a date and time.

2) Pick your favorite progressive charity (Yes, DU included).

3) Pick what you think will be the "Code Name" of the operation.

4) There will be two winners:
a) The one who comes closest to the actual time of the attack (We'll use Eastern Daylight Time). Each guess will be for both AM and PM.
b) The one who picks the "Code Name" judged closest to the actual one by a popular vote.

5) Everyone who participates is requested to make a donation of any size to the favorite charities of one winner or both winners.

6) In the event that no attacks take place by November 3, 2006 the pool is closed and void.

I'll go first:

1) Date/Time: June 6, 2005 at 6:06 AM/PM
2) Code Name: Operation Revelation
3) Favorite Charity: Committee to Elect Jass Stewart (second choice is ACLU)
