...when GOPers tell me how "proud " they feel that the U.S. has "done such a wonderful thing for the Iraqi people":
Bush's stated goal was to eliminate the "vast stockpiles" of WMDs. He failed miserably. You can't get around that. The stated primary goal -- the one that justified using force -- was not achieved.
This invasion MIGHT end up creating a good end result for the Iraqis (though the election results there indicate that they also might end up with an Iran-style regime). But the cost to the Iraqis was huge: 100,000-plus civilian deaths caused by people whose "help" they never asked for.
And even if Iraq does come out better in the end... was it worth it to us? Remember, the U.S. military exists to protect OUR country. And I don't see how anyone can say that the threat from Iraq was so great that it justified what we did and the huge cost we paid (which is still rising).
Look, there are lots of bad countries out there. But never before in our history did a president ever suggest that it was out job to play God and "fix" them. If we're going to start doing that, we'll be at war for a VERY long time. And out nation will end up bankrupt.
The Iraq war was a mistake.
