UN to witness Sudan peace pledge
Sudan's government and southern rebels are expected to sign an agreement on Friday, pledging to reach a final peace deal by the end of the year.

The signing is due to take place at a UN Security Council meeting in Kenya, devoted to ending conflicts in southern Sudan and the western region of Darfur.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has said an agreement in the south would help to reverse the crisis in Darfur.

The council is expected to adopt a resolution on the country.

The Security Council president, US ambassador John Danforth, said all 15 members now supported the text of a resolution aimed at bringing peace to Sudan, which would be formally adopted on Friday.
