Police accidentally shoot poll candidate dead - Nigeria
os, Nigeria - Police hunting suspected armed robbers accidentally shot dead an opposition candidate who was defeated in last weekend's chaotic local government elections, their commander said on Thursday.

Commissioner Innocent Ilozuoke, chief of police in Plateau State, said officers had been called to the rescue of Titus Guyit, an opposition leader in the town of Pankshin, when his house was attacked by robbers late on Thursday.

The squad arrived during a power cut and in the darkness mistook the politician for a robber as he attempted to escape his compound. They shot him dead, Ilozuoke said, expressing his condolences in the state capital, Jos.
