Whites using 'swart gevaar' tactics - Mbeki

President Thabo Mbeki has flayed what he calls white politics and scaremongers who aimed at instilling a sense of "swart gevaar" (black menace) in the hearts of voters.

Writing in the weekly newsletter, ANC Today, Mbeki said this fear came in a form of rumours about him planning to secure a third term; contemplating appointing three deputy presidents; and an ANC majority being a threat to democracy or leading to South Africa becoming a one-party state.

"The fear factor has long been a feature of white politics in our country. For long periods, this section of our population has been subjected to the unimaginable terrors of "die swart gevaar" (the "black menace" of majority rule) and "die rooi gevaar" (the "red threat" of communism), Mbeki wrote.
