Venezuela's Opposition Pleads for Help
Venezuela's Opposition Pleads for Help

CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuela's opposition met with international observers Wednesday, pleading for help in reversing the denial of a recall referendum against President Hugo Chavez.

Rioting subsided in cities throughout this deeply divided country, which sits atop the Western Hemisphere's largest oil reserves and is the world's No. 5 exporter. Venezuelans are torn between those who say Chavez has become increasingly autocratic and those who say he speaks for the poor.

At least seven people have died and scores have been wounded since demonstrations began Friday, security officials said.

The violence halted after pleas from international observers and some opposition officials, but leaders warned more unrest is in store if citizens are denied their constitutional right to demand Chavez's ouster. A march was planned in Caracas for Thursday.

If by "torn" they mean torn across the 5% rich and the 95% poor line, they are probably correct.

But i can't say as i feel sorry for that 5%. Piss on 'em.

2. Chavez has the support of only about 88% of the population, and they

are almost to a man, poor indigenous people who consistently put their own selfish concerns above those of US business interests and investors.

Chavez continues to defeat democracy by insisting that they be paid if they work and establishing programs to provide them with education and medical treatment, against the express wishes of the affluent opposition, many of whom have made the supreme sacrifice of moving as much of the national treasure they can get their hands on into their personal bank accounts in the US for safekeeping.
