'The Passion' Will Screen in France

PARIS - Mel Gibson (news)'s "The Passion of the Christ" will screen in France in April, a distributor said, quashing speculation the movie might not be shown on French screens.

Tarak ben Ammar, who manages Carthago Films, said he would distribute the film. It will be shown in French theaters "in April, over the Easter period," he told TF1 television Monday night. Easter is on April 11.

There had been media speculation the movie hadn't found a French distributor.

"The Passion of the Christ," which depicts the crucifixion of Jesus, opened in the United States on Ash Wednesday and is gradually debuting worldwide.

The movie, which opened with $125.2 million in box office sales in North American theaters over five days, has deeply divided religious communities. Church groups have bought out entire theaters for screenings, while some Jewish and Christian leaders say "The Passion" could revive the notion that Jews were collectively responsible for Christ's death.
