A Letter To President Bush
I hope Arab kings and leaders send this letter to President Bush when they meet in Tunisia next month. Mr. President,
We decided to send you this letter together, because: first, it represents the opinion of all of us, and second, because Arab-American relations are living through a rough period that we wish to overcome, and get things back to their old affability, and third, because we found out that each of us who visited you, spoke differently from the other.
We will start with something of interest to you, which is also important to us. We promise to help you in stopping terrorism all over the world. Terrorism targets humanity, not just New York's twin towers, a hotel, or a residential compound in Riyadh. We want you to succeed, since a second option is non-applicable. However, we ask you: how could we help you, if you do not help yourself, and do not help us in helping you? How could we help you in countering the proliferation of nuclear weapons, when you overlook Israel, and focus on every other country?
We will go back to the essence. We Arabs might disagree on many issues within one country, or between two countries, but we all agree on the Palestinian cause. We tell you clearly that settling this issue will end most, but not all, reasons and pretexts for terrorism. Similarly, we tell you that if no settlement is reached, there would be no peace in the Middle East, and no place for Israel among us. For clear reasons, we hope you could postpone the project of Middle Eastern Partnership until peace is reached. Perhaps you noticed that even when one or two countries signed peace agreements with Israel, the people of this or that country did not sign with their governments. Israel will remain their enemy until a Palestinian state is established. When such a state is established, you will be pleased with their reactions.
