Baghdad community shocked by slaying of Sunni Muslim cleric
BAGHDAD, Iraq - (KRT) - A Sunni Muslim cleric whose followers described him as a peaceful, quiet force in the community was shot dead during the weekend when gunmen knocked on the door of his home just after prayers, neighbors said.
The assassination of Sheik Dhamir al-Dhari, a cleric for the past 20 years in Baghdad's western Khadra neighborhood, stunned people in the area, who said they could not fathom why he had been targeted and shot to death Saturday.
"Everybody knew him, Sunni, Shia, they loved him alike," said Ziad Hamed, a neighbor.
"Who could have done this? Everyone knows this is a time when people are launching all kinds of war in Iraq. ... People are happy to create problems in Iraq," he said, as a crowd of women at al-Dhari's small mosque wailed in sorrow.
