Protesters who caused chaos in the streets of Guatemala's capital headed home Friday after former dictator Efrain Rios Montt asked them to halt demonstrations on his behalf.
Some 300 police officers arrived at the Civic Center Plaza and watched the departure of protesters who a day earlier forced the closure of government buildings and the U.S. Embassy.
It is not clear whether Rios Montt's candidacy will be validated by the courts because he seized power in a military coup in 1982.
Guatemala's constitution bars former presidents who seized power illegally from seeking the presidency.
Club-wielding rioters smashed windows, burned cars, attacked reporters and blocked traffic throughout the day Thursday. Police did little and the army didn't intervene despite pleas from President Alfonso Portillo.
