Former President Lee Teng-hui yesterday criticized the pan-blue opposition alliance's presidential candidate for being intellectually dishonest in discussing economic issues and for "saying one thing while doing another."
At a book launching yesterday, the ex-president accused opposition candidates Kuomintang Chairman Lien Chan (??) and People First Party James Soong (???) as lacking a sense of shame, which Lee believes to be an essential element of a Taiwanese system of morality.
"Is Lien is capable (of suggesting any solutions) while he condemns President Chen's failure to fight for the economy?" Lee asked.
"Shouldn't I know who is capable (of implementing economic policies) after being the president for 10 years?"
Lee received a doctorate in agricultural economics from Cornell University in the United States. He has remained a student of Taiwan's economy over his 50-year career.
