Brussels - A messy pastry eater was likely to blame for a suspicious white powder that closed a platform at a major Brussels metro station for more than two hours on Tuesday morning, a spokesperson for the subway said.
Rush-hour commuters were evacuated from the platform and passengers prevented from getting off trains at Schuman station in the centre of Brussels' European Union district after the powder was found by a cleaner near a telephone box.
Early analysis suggested it was fine sugar, used to top a croissant or pastry, rather than anthrax or another toxic agent, said Jean-Paul Alvin, a spokesperson for Brussels metro operators Societe des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles.
