Chen, Lien face off in first debate - TW
Cross-strait policies and personality traits became the focal points of yesterday's presidential debate, the first-ever televised presidential debate in the nation's history.

President Chen Shui-bian (???) questioned election rival Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Lien Chan (??) over China policy while Lien focused on the president's character, calling Chen "capricious," "irresponsible" and "unreliable."

During his eight-minute concluding statement, Chen took aim at Lien's idea that sovereignty issues should be put aside when dealing with China, saying that such an approach was hazardous.

"We have to stand firm on the nation's sovereignty, not put it aside; this is highly dangerous," Chen said. "Our stance is clear; that is, the national name of Taiwan is the Republic of China and we're dedicated to safeguarding the status quo across the Taiwan Strait."

Chen also called on Lien to stop hindering the nation's first national referendum, which is scheduled to be held alongside the presidential poll on March 20.

1. Editorial: In debate, Lien seized no initiative
Yesterday, the long-awaited first round of live televised debates between the two presidential candidates -- President Chen Shui-bian (???) and Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Lien Chan (??) -- took place. Overall, while Chen's performance was, as expected, more aggressive than Lien's, the two candidates maintained a relatively calm and rational composure throughout.

Before the debate, some commentators had said that in order to score in the debate Lien would need to leave behind his usual conservatism and go on the offensive for a change so as to attack the incumbent where it hurts. While Lien's efforts in this regard were evident, they simply weren't enough.

Even on the domestic issues that affect people's daily lives -- such as educational reform and economic growth, issues which are not only the focal points of Lien's campaign but were included among the debate topics at the insistence of the pan-blue camp -- Lien did not enjoy the upper hand. One obvious reason for this, and a fundamental problem for the pan-blue camp's campaign, is Lien's inability to offer solutions to problems once he has pointed out that they exist.

2. Chen urges voters to 'write history,' save sovereignty
Declaring that his Democratic Progressive Party ticket could best "resist pressure," President Chen Shui-bian (????) urged voters to demonstrate their belief in Taiwan and support for reform by giving him a second term, while Kuomintang chairman and pan-blue presidential hopeful Lien Chan (??) charged Chen with "ideological" rule.

Taiwan's first-ever presidential debate was organized by the Public Television Service, the Taipei Society (??) and several newspapers and broadcast on 11 other television and five radio stations yesterday afternoon.

After issuing eight-minute opening statements, the two candidates faced questions from five scholars and social activists, fired five questions at each other and issued concluding statements.

3. BBC Whore Chris Hogg! Help get him fired!

ALL reports coming out of Taiwan, media and my 100's of friends living in TW said the tone of the debate, in Mandarin, was NOTHING like Whore Hogg is reporting to the world.

To the Chief Editor of Chris Hogg
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/3487947.stm

1. The emphasis of the debate was NOT as Hogg publihed.
2. From the polls around Taiwan Chen is ahead, unless you read the KMT owned/controlled newspapers. (Hogg doesn't know this?)
3. In the 2000 election, Jeffrey Parker, Reuters Taiwan Bureau Chief failed to even mention Chen as a candidate. He only mentioned Soong and Lien, KMT Nationalis. I got lucky and got the attention of senior Reuters management and Parker was fired. I hope the BBC has the moral will to fire Hogg! If NOT we all know who controls the BBC Asia. The Communist Chinese!

4. Polls find televised debate did little to sway opinion - Whore Hogg LIAR

Although various polls yesterday indicated that President Chen Shui-bian (???) had outshined his rival Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Lien Chan (??) in the country's first televised presidential-candidate debate on Saturday, they revealed that the debate had a limited effect on voters' support of the candidates.

Various polls conducted by the media after the debate showed similar results: That viewers agreed that Chen's performance was better than Lien's with a rating difference of between 3 and 14 percent.

A poll by the Chinese-language newspaper China Times indicated that viewers generally was of the opinion Chen was more eloquent and quick-witted than his rival. Chen's approval rating was 56 percent and Lien's 15 percent.

In addition, 36 percent of the public favored the administrative platforms proposed by Chen, while 32 percent of viewers supported Lien's ideas.
