UN convoy comes under fire in the DRC

Bunia - Tribal fighters hiding on the banks of Lake Albert have attacked a United Nations boat convoy en route to investigate a reported massacre in volatile north-eastern Ituri province, a UN spokesperson said on Thursday.

The convoy of UN speedboats was heading for the hamlet of Gobu on Wednesday to investigate reported human rights abuses in the area, three weeks after tribal fighters reportedly killed as many as 100 passengers in boats on the lake, Leocadio Salmeron, spokesperson of the UN mission to Democratic Republic of Congo, said.

However, the UN human rights and public information officers came under heavy fire from unknown assailants who opened fire with high-caliber assault rifles about seven kilometres from the site of the reported massacre, Salmeron said.
