Report says prisoners tortured in Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Lashings with copper cables, electrical shocks, cigarette burns and other forms of torture have caused deaths and serious injury to political prisoners and other inmates in Syria, says a report from a human rights watchdog organization.

In the first report of its kind, the unlicensed Syrian Organization of Human Rights urged authorities to exert more control over prisons and to adhere to international standards for the treatment of prisoners.

The report listed several cases of torture that "contradict international recommendations for safeguarding the right of physical and moral safety according to U.N. principles and the International Declaration of Human Rights."

"Interrogations taking place in detention centers are always coupled with threats and intimidation that affect the morale of the detainees and inflict psychological scars and problems," the report said.
