36 journos killed in 2003
New Zealand's National Business Review

Journalism can be a risky business and 2003 proved that point emphatically as the profession suffered an unusually high number of losses, mostly attributable to war-zone coverage.

According to CPJ, the single deadliest year in the last decade was 1994, when 66 journalists were killed; 51 in 1995; 37 in 2001, including eight journalists who were killed while covering the war in Afghanistan; 36 journalists were killed in both 1999 and 2003. In both years, conflicts claimed about a third of the total, with 10 journalists killed in Sierra Leone in 1999 and 13 in Iraq in 2003.

In the Middle East, two journalists were killed by Israeli army gunfire in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, bringing to six the number of journalists killed since the Palestinian Intifada began in 2000, CPJ says.
