Tauranga Airport closed over suspicious package, turns out to be "nothing sinister"
LATEST: A suspicious package which closed Tauranga Airport for six hours today turned out to be "nothing sinister", police say.

Navy bomb squad officers this evening examined the unattended cardboard package, found just before midday, and gave it the all clear, Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders said.

The bomb squad was called after a staff member at the airport found the package and alerted security teams after finding it heavier than he expected.

The bomb squad - whose attendance was delayed as low cloud meant they could not travel by helicopter - arrived by road about 5pm and determined by 6pm that it did not need to be detonated.
