MOGADISHU, March 23 (Reuters) - A missile shot down a plane after
it took off from Mogadishu airport on Friday, the private Somali radio
station Shabelle said.

"I saw the plane flying at low altitude, a missile hit one of the wings,
and then the plane fell," a Shabelle reporter said. Witnesses told
Reuters they could see columns of smoke on the ground, but could
not confirm they were coming from a plane.

There were no immediate details of the aircraft.

Plane 'shot down' in Somali city

A cargo plane carrying 11 people has been shot down after taking off from the
main airport in the Somali capital Mogadishu, local officials say.

It crashed in the city's northern suburbs. Eyewitnesses said the plane plunged
to the ground in flames.

"Three rockets were fired at the plane and one hit the plane," Somali government
spokesman Hussein Mohamed Muhamoud told the AFP news agency.

It is not known if any of those on board survived the crash.
