Indonesia to buy 2 subs as well as other warships

The Indonesian navy will purchase a number of new warships, including two submarines, as part of efforts to modernize its aging fleet, media reports said yesterday.

The announcement by Lambertus F. Silooy, the defense ministry's director of procurement, did not specify which country would be the supplier. But the Indonesian military, which traditionally relied on U.S. weaponry, has said it wants to diversify its sources of defense equipment.

Last month, the air force accepted its first four Russian-built Sukhoi SU-27 long-range fighters and two Mi-35 attack helicopters. The purchase, worth US$192.6 million, is part of a larger barter deal between Jakarta and Moscow that may see the delivery of up to 40 Sukhoi planes this decade.
