PSC: Go with wind and gas turbines (no coal for Delaware)

Wind and natural gas are in; coal is out.

That is the recommendation of the Public Service Commission report, which on Wednesday, May 2, announced it supports a mix of wind power and natural gas as future sources of electric power to Delmarva Power. The Public Service Commission (PSC) is scheduled to make a recommendation to Delmarva Power by Tuesday, May 8.

A battle to determine the sources of new power has raged in Delaware since December. In a 73-page report, the commission staff recommends power supplier Delmarva Power negotiate with Bluewater Wind and Conectiv for a hybrid power approach to new energy.

When Delmarva Power issued a request for proposals in December, in response to legislation calling for price stability, three proposals were received. Bluewater Wind proposed a 600-megawatt wind farm off the coast of Delaware, Conectiv proposed a 200-megawatt natural-gas plant and NRG Energy proposed a 600-megawatt coal-gasification system next to the existing Indian River Power Plant.
