Gingrich drops skepticism on global warming

WASHINGTON -- In a Capitol Hill debate about global warming touted by its moderator as a "smackdown" between former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, Gingrich praised Kerry's recently released book about environmentalism, acknowledged that global warming is real, and offered what amounted to an unexpected apology for his party's inaction on curtailing greenhouse gas emissions.

"I'm not going to stand up here and defend our failure to lead," said Gingrich, who is considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and plans to release a book in the fall burnishing his environmental credentials. "There has to be a green conservatism."

6. No, "Green Conservatism" is not an oxymoron
Conservatives - by definition - are supposed to be about conserving. They're supposed to be cautious. When the leading climatologists are telling the world that there's a great threat, conservatives should - by definition - seek to "play it safe."

5. it helps to rub this in the noses of the right
they are so conflicted, to hate newt or to ignore him, to support him or to destroy him? They know he could be their only hope, as he is their tie to the take over that put them in power and got us to where we are now, his "contract with america" gave them their foothold, do they foresake him or ignore him and hope he goes away.

Oh where is where St. Raygun when they need him? :sarcasm:

9. I'm no fan of Newt, either
But if he's seen even a little sliver of light, it's worthwhile to encourage him.

A lot of people still listen to Gingrich. If the Conservatives -- most of whom these days couldn't even find their ass if there was a GPS transmitter shoved up it -- need a little direction, I'll be happy to point them the right way. Even if Newt asks me.

Part of the deal of "saving the world" is about leadership. Well, it's time we led.

10. Climate Denial and CPC
I wouldn't put it past Newtie that if he got somewhere close to where he'd have power again, he'd flip-flop and claim that the danger of man-made global climate change is overrated. Global climate change denial is rapidly becoming one of those mandatory political positions for what the right-wingers have for "politically correct."

:grr:
